When I say camping is allowed at Molesworth Cob Cottage (northern end of the Acheron Road) and the Acheron Accommodation House (southern end of the Acheron Road) I mean camping in a tent or campervan (no dumping of waste though!).
There are allocated camp sites not too far from those landmark buildings. They are the simplest of the simplest sites, with just toilets and water provided – but the scenery is worth the lack of comfort.
I have seen some tents on the river bank near the Acheron Accommodation House but I do not know how they collect the camping fee – probably also in an honesty box, as for the brochures at the Accommation House. The costis NZ$ 6 per adult per night, and NZ$ 1.50 per child.
You are NOT allowed to stay in the house.
On the Rainbow Road you can – if you are lucky – stay at the four bunk Island Gully Hut. There is a woodburning stove for heating but you have to bring your own firewood and a gas stove for cooking. Plus: A DoC hut pass is required, available at all DoC offices.
There is also a hut with toilets and water supply on private land at Coldwater Creek. Connors Creek Hut has six bunks and is at easy waling distance from the road.
In the back country, huts provide a base for hunters, climbers and hikers. You have to purchance Back Country Hut Tickets before your trip.
The photo shows the campsite near the Acheron Accommodation House. If you enlarge it you see some red dots on a lawn to the right of the river. They are tents.
