Albert Park Backpackers
This hostel is central, well organized, cheap and (best of all) non-affiliated. So you don't have to buy or carry those stupid BBH or YHA cards (though this becomes unavoidable once leaving Auckland).
A bed in a 12 bed dorm is 17NZD.
