Enough Time?

by Nissanmit

Hi, I am arriving 1045am in Auckland in mid Sept. Intending to fly domestic on Air NZ to Christchurch on a 1pm flight. Is it too rush? Cos the next flight is 340pm which is a long wait.

Re: Enough Time?

by Steve51

you should be ok, but that will depend on your incoming flight arriving on time.
http://www.aucklandairport.co.nz/AirportInformation/Travel-between-terminals.aspx suggests you allow 3 hours....
You will have to claim your baggage at the international terminal and do the customs/immigration clearance, then figure out your transfer requirements...easy enough I think if you are Star Alliance international and domestic, probably quite a lot harder if not. The Air NZ domestic terminal is about 15minutes walk from international, and there is a free bus every 20m. Standard check-in time for domestic flights is 30 minutes, but again you should confirm with your carrier or check your ticket. JetStar are fairly aggressive on this.

Re: Enough Time?

Thanks a lot. I am coming in on SQ and flying domestic to Christchurch on Air NZ. Both are star alliances. Sorry, can I just ask, whats better-off if we are flying star alliances air craft vis-a-viz say jetstar?

Re: Enough Time?

by Steve51

Air NZ will fly AKL-CHC probably every hour...JetStar will fly maybe 2 or 3 times a day, so if you miss your connecting Air NZ flight, then the next one wont be far off, and the Star Alliance will look after their partners...JetStar probably dont care too much...but I may be being unkind. JetStar fares can be cheap, but as soon as you add luggage they are less attractive. Check the comparative allowances.
I guess you are coming on SQ285 ? I did this in October last year and from a scheduled arrival 11:45 made it on to Air NZ at 14:10, so that's about the same gap you have. (October was daylight savings time, so an hour later than your schedule)

Enough Time?

If you chose Jetstar, don't dawdle, as there have been problems with people missing their flights after being turned away for being late even though they joined the queue on time.

Re: Enough Time?

Yes, flying in on the 1045hr SQ flight. I am flying dom on Air NZ. Not risking myself with Jetstar! Thanks a lot for the advice. I really appreciate virtual tourist and all the people here!

Have a great visit. Will still be cold then, but may be you are going skiing :-)

It is feasible if everything clicks like clockwork. But more often it won't. I wouldn't risk it.

Do take Air NZ as they have domestic check-in counter at the international terminal so you don't need to take check-in luggage with you between airports.

Travel Tips for Auckland

HANGI - TRADITIONAL MAORI COOKING

by Terrestre

Hangi is one of the Maori ways of cooking under the ground using hot rocks. Any kind of meet like lamb, chicken, pork or fish is suitable to be cooked this way. The more common vegetables used are potatoes, kumara (sweet potato), pumpkin and corn.

From the preparation to enjoying the food it takes about 7 hours. This is certainly not "fast food".

Viaduct Basin

by aramat

Viaduct Basin is a vibrant waterfront precinct. New Zealand's excellent National Maritime Museum is here, and the area is also home for the city's most contemporary cafe and bar culture. It's a perfect place for a drink or a meal.

Manukau Shopping Centre

by keeweechic

Manukau is New Zealand’s third largest city. At the shopping centre there are than 100 stores as well as a fairly decent sized food court. There is a Foodtown supermarket in the South Mall and a Farmers Department store in the North Mall. There is a mezzanine floor but this is for businesses and the library. There is plenty of public transport and parking is free. The shopping centre is just off the southern motorway and close by to Rainbow’s end. The centre is open 9.00 – 5.30pm Fri – Wed, and 9.00am to 9.00pm on Thurs

Wine on the patio...

by skywalkerbeth about Vino VIno

This is on Waiheke Island, in the Hauraki gulf. It's a 30 minute or so ferry ride then a 15 minute drive to the main part of the island with shops and restaurants. It has a stunning view over the water. Good wines, especially from New Zealand, and good food too. Definitely sit out on the terrace if you can!

Waterfront Brunch or Dinner.

by kiwi about Kahve

Set in an old 1920's wooden building on the corner overlooking the harbour, Kahve is a really pleasing place to have brunch or dinner.

Brunch Menu

Some items only.
$4NZ Warm Croissant
$4 Toasted English Muffin
$8.50 Cereal and Fresh Fruit
$12 Pancakes with maple syrup and fresh fruit.
$13 French Toast with bacon and fresh fruit.
$13 Spanish Omelette with roast tomato and karengo salsa

Kahve Breakfast grilled bacon, sausage, tomato, hash browns, mushrooms with eggs any style.........$NZD16.00 From the Brunch menu, French Toast with bacon and fresh fruit was my absolute favourite. Just as well I don't live close by!
They serve the most delicious coffee and real fast service too. The staff are incredibly friendly and the whole atmosphere is warm and buzzing. I love the place!

I have to also mention that the balcony is covered in clear plastic walls, that are able to be rolled up, to ensure all year dining protected from the weather. It's simply marvellous!!
