Also known as Ascot Metropolis, Ascot Grand Metropolis or just the Metropolis. Built in 1999, this building is the 3rd tallest building (155m/509ft and 39 stories) in Auckland and has been described as ‘Auckland's showpiece New York style apartment tower’. The choice is yours at the Metropolis whether you want hotel style service and/or self-catering in every room. There are permanent residents within the hotel who own their own apartments as well as the transiting guests who stay either long or short term. The hotel has its own restaurants, bars and leisure facilities as well as being centrally located just off Queen Street and close to Albert Park.
The Ascott was my favourite Auckland hotel when it was on my companies preferred supplier list. It is located around the corner of the top end of Victoria street and is very handy to the shops and food places of downtown Auckland city. The hotel is typical of inner city hotels in that it is a high rise hotel & has a large number (145) of very nicelt appointed rooms.
Most rooms have okay views with the the best (sea views) located higher up on the east side of the hotel. On a clear day you can see across the harbour to the Coromandel Peninsula. The rooms (that I have stayed in) are all uniformly nice though rather sterile.
The restaurant is okay for breakfast though way overpriced (I always find a nice cafe instead).
