ACB = COMPLETE WITH VODKA PUNCH

The ONLY place to stay in Auckland for backpackers. It used to be an office block or something and is HUUUUUUUGE. Very welcoming after a long flight, big sofas to collapse on to. Lots of travel info, job info if u r intending on working, large internet area, large kitchen.

Down points are the excessive heat in the rooms, loud Austrians, boiling hot kitchen in which u almost pass out b4 u can complete your meal, and annoying kitchen staff that chuck out your food (well noodles) with no warning about fridge cleaning!

Other plus points are the massage chairs (!) and the social atmosphere complete the Globe Bar beneath complete with free vodka punch (shudder) and horizontal bungy (!!). There are also nightly hostel activities like a trip to a local pizza place complete with wine galore which ended up all over the floor in most cases.

A great place to start any trip of NZ

Best Hostel

Great place to stay
So central to everything
Great facilities, travel desk, 40 computer stations for e-mail $1 for 15 mins, big kitchen, 24 hour reception, big clean bathrooms

Bunk beds NZ$22, Double room NZ$62. Special deal if you want to come back to ACB after travelling a bit and pay in advance you can get 20% off which means we got a double room ensuite for the same price as a regular room

Fridge in each room so you can keep stuff chilled.

Disadvantage - showers are the water efficient ones so you have to keep pressing the button to keep it on

Unique Quality: Association with Globe bar next door, gives out vouchers for free drinks.
Has good nights like Miss Backpacker (Tues nite) and Mr Globe (Thurs nite)
Good happening bar

Handy to main Street of Auckland

Auckland Central Backpackers or ACB is close to Queen St and a friendly place. Has comfortable dorm beds with resonable prices ranging from $22 plus a $10 key deposit. Also has job seeking and backpacker travelling staff on hand. The internet cafe/cafe is ok although places on the street may be closer and more useful ie messenger etc. Has a good chillout lounge area and 2 tv rooms. Kitchen and laundry facilites also with a good bar downstairs.

Unique Quality: staff where friendly and some of the fellow backpackers where to.

Auckland Central Backbackers

ACB is a centrally-located hostel, right off the main street of Queen St. and a few minutes walk to the waterfront. I had an interesting stay here, to say the least. I stayed 2 nights. The first night, I couldn't sleep because the walls were thin and the people next door were going at it and shaking the wall that my bed was up against, plus there was extra noise from a cafe or nightclub outside. The 2nd night was much more comfortable and quiet.

Room rates are NZ$22 and $24 for dorm rooms, $62 for doubles, and $85 for a double ensuite. (I stayed in a single, but I didn't see a price for it last time I looked on the website)

Unique Quality: Rooms are a decent size, and bathrooms are shared (not the cleanest, but it was acceptable). Security is very good, and the staff is great.

It has a cafe, travel centre, internet, and lounge. There is also transportation to and from the airport.

the ultimate backpacker

The ACB seems to be the ultimate backpacker in the centre of Auckland.
It's uge and based very central: corner Queen Street and Darby Street!
The samll dorm (6 beds) where I styed was airconditioned and quiet - even though the ACB is in such a central place!
They were Winner of the New Zealand Tourism Award for "Best Budget Accommodation" 1999, 1994 & Finalist in 1996 & the 1997 Finalist for "Retail".

Unique Quality: All you need is provided:
Travel agency, Netcafe, Bar, chill out zone and all typical backpacker units: kitchen, laundry, tv room, Coin/Credit & Card Phones throughout the building

Great place to begin.

Very safe, central and enjoyable place to stay. Great to go here first and get orientated, learn the ropes and move on later. Can be a bit noisy though at times.

Unique Quality: Modern, very purposeful with lots of travellers around.
Open 24 hours, some air conditioning. And internet café and a bar, and travel centre.
They can offer luggage storage as well.

ACB

Not to be confused with Auckland Bakcpackers central, the ACB as its better known is huge! Its New Zelands biggest with about 300 beds over 6 floors with a good bar/restaurant on the 7th floor! Dorms are pretty big, generally between 6 and 12 beds. They cost about $25. The bar on 7th floor does great cheap food, i can recommend the lasagne and chips!, and the beer comes highly recommended too! Its very central and they organise tours here and almost anything you need.

Auckland's Noisiest Hostel

by GoogleGuru about Auckland Central Backpackers

My first night in New Zealand after a long flight from North American was spent at Auckland Central Backpackers (note that when getting a lift to the hostel, taxi drivers seem to known "ACB" moreso than the full name).

The hostel appears to be an old school, with lots of rooms of varying sizes. There is a bar on the roof of the building (both open-air and enclosed parts) where one can relax and unwind. There is usually an event in the bar most nights (such as Jell-O wrestling competitions against other hostels) and it's a good place to meet other travellers.

Backpackers in Auckland

by madsimon

Hi there!

I'm going to visit Auckland in September for about two weeks. Could anyone please recommend a good backpackers hostel in reasonable price?

Kind regards

Simon

I stayed at the Auckland Central Backpackers a few years ago, and it was quite alright. Rooms were very clean. But then we switched to what was back then called the Somerset Grand Metropolis, and the backpacker place was kind of forgotten...

Thanks a lot Santa!

I suppose you like French movies :).

Whatever you do don't stay at Auckland Central Backpackers. I stayed there last February and thought it was awful. It's like a factory, much too big and without any atmospere. It wasn't clean and the rooms were very small. I recommend staying at Base Backpackers. It's right in the city and I think it's 20 dollars if you're a VIP member, otherwise 21 dollars.
