I stayed at Auckland's BK Hostel for 5 nights in late March 2006 and then, following a 6 week trip around the region, returned for a further 2 nights in early May 2006.
BK Hostel is conveniently located on Karangahape Road, close to Queen Street, and can easily be reached from the airport by catching the "Air Bus". (Catch the Air Bus to the "Kiwi International Hotel" stop, walk 50m up steep Queen Street and turn right onto Karangahape Road). The hostel is located above a branch of Subway and Dunkin Donuts on the corner of Karangahape Road and Mercury Lane.
The hostel has small dorm rooms as well as private single and double rooms. During my first stay at the hostel I stayed in a windowless single room at a cost of 40 NZD (approx. 14 GBP) per night. During my second stay, I again booked a windowless single, but having stayed there recently and being remembered by the receptionist, I was upgraded to a single room WITH a window!
The private rooms have a bed, a small fridge, a desk, a chair and a wardrobe. The windowless room had a small air vent, but the room did tend to get quite stuffy at times. The room with a window had a large window overlooking Karangahape Road.
Bathroom facilities are shared. There are separate male and female shower and toilet rooms on each floor. The bathrooms are spotlessly clean and each contains 3 shower cubicles and 3 toilet cubicles. I never once had to queue for a shower, and hot water was available at all times of day and night.
No towels are provided and there is no daily maid service.
Unique Quality: Each floor also contains kitchen and laundry facilities. There is a common room with sofas, satellite TV, a pool table, books and board games located on the second floor.
The reception staff are friendly and there are lots of free brochures and maps provided for guests. There are also a couple of computer terminals with Internet access (3 NZD per hour) in reception.
Guests receive an electronic swipe card with their room key which allows them to enter the building's main entrance outside of reception hours. Reception is open from 8am until 10pm daily.
The centre of Auckland and the ferry terminal can be reached on foot in about 20-25 minutes. This is a pleasant downhill walk down Queen Street.....but the return journey can be a bit of a struggle!
There are lots of cafes, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, shops, minimarkets and Internet cafes on Karangahape Road right outside the hostel. Further along, K Road does become a bit seedy, especially after dark.
A very good value hostel with spotlessly clean rooms, friendly, helpful staff and a good location. I'll stay here again if I ever return to Auckland!
