Really pleasant, nice rooms, pleasant view over the racecourse. Don't have that city hemmed in feeling, few gardens and parks around, really nice. Great Conference facilities in this hotel.
Away from central city bussle, but really accessible, just a short taxi ride to the city. Double Tree Bar on the Ground Floor is open 11.00am until late evening. You can get light meals here throughout the day. Servings are very generous!! Acacia Restaurant just across the hall from the Double Tree Bar, is very pleasant, and the food of high standard. Breakfast: 6am - 10.30am (weekends 6am - 11am) Dinner: 6pm - 10pm 7 days a la carte. The breakfast, which was included in the price, was superb. Continental style or English cooked style. Plenty of nice food!! | | | | BK Hostel: Good value hostel on K Road | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I stayed at Auckland's BK Hostel for 5 nights in late March 2006 and then, following a 6 week trip around the region, returned for a further 2 nights in early May 2006. BK Hostel is conveniently located on Karangahape Road, close to Queen Street, and can easily be reached from the airport by catching the "Air Bus". (Catch the Air Bus to the "Kiwi International Hotel" stop, walk 50m up steep Queen Street and turn right onto Karangahape Road). The hostel is located above a branch of Subway and Dunkin Donuts on the corner of Karangahape Road and Mercury Lane. The hostel has small dorm rooms as well as private single and double rooms. Duing my first stay at the hostel I stayed in a windowless single room at a cost of 40 NZD (approx. 14 GBP) per night. During my second stay, I again booked a windowless single, but having stayed there recently and being remembered by the receptionist, I was upgraded to a single room WITH a window! The private rooms have a bed, a small fridge, a desk, a chair and a wardrobe. The windowless room had a small air vent, but the room did tend to get quite stuffy at times. The room with a window had a large window overlooking Karangahape Road. Bathroom facilities are shared. There are separate male and female shower and toilet rooms on each floor. The bathrooms are spotlessly clean and each contains 3 shower cubicles and 3 toilet cubicles. I never once had to queue for a shower, and hot water was available at all times of day and night. No towels are provided and there is no daily maid service.
Each floor also contains kitchen and laundry facilities. There is a common room with sofas, satellite TV, a pool table, books and board games located on the second floor. The reception staff are friendly and there are lots of free brochures and maps provided for guests. There are also a couple of computer terminals with Internet access (3 NZD per hour) in reception. Guests receive an electronic swipe card with their room key which allows them to enter the building's main entrance outside of reception hours. Reception is open from 8am until 10pm daily. The centre of Auckland and the ferry terminal can be reached on foot in about 20-25 minutes. This is a pleasant downhill walk down Queen Street.....but the return journey can be a bit of a struggle! There are lots of cafes, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, shops, minimarkets and Internet cafes on Karangahape Road right outside the hostel. Further along, K Road does become a bit seedy, especially after dark. A very good value hostel with spotlessly clean rooms, friendly, helpful staff and a good location. I'll stay here again if I ever return to Auckland! | | | | Badger's of Devonport: Auckland's Peaceful & Secret Suburb-B&B Homestay | Tip Rating: | | | | |
PHOTO: BADGER'S OF DEVONPORT B&B/HOMESTAY SHOWING THE FRONT OF THE HOME, BUILT IN 1906. THIS IS TYPICAL OF MANY OF THE HOMES IN DEVONPORT AND IN MANY CASES, THROUGHOUT NEW ZEALAND. THERE ARE JUST MORE OF THESE STYLE HOMES HERE THAN IN ANY CITY AREA WE VISITED. A DELIGHTFUL COMMUNITY WITH LOTS OF STAINED GLASS AND WOOD FILLIGREE. Heather and Badger are very welcoming and always take time to discuss subjects of interest to their guests. The e-mail I got from Heather when I made initial arrangements was very friendly, helpful and pleasant. I got the immediate impression we would enjoy staying here and we did. Dinner with the Millers is delightful and delicious and at breakfast we were spoiled for choice in a very sunny and pleasant dining room. Heather and Badger Miller have a delightful B&B Homestay in Devonport just a ten to fifteen minute walk from the ferry dock, up past the village and along the road, above and paralleling the waterfront. The house is pleasantly decorated in Victorian splendor with a light and airy feel.
On our first stay at the beginning of our NZ experience (3 days) we stayed inside the house in a room with a private bath across the hall. This was great. On our second visit we stayed in an attached suite of two rooms at the rear and this was even better as we were able to spread out for our last three days in NZ before flying home and the facilities lacked for nothing in either setup. | | | | Kiwi International Queen Street Hotel And Hostel: Backpacker style Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Well, I wouldn't exactly call it our favourite accommodation, but we didn't arrive until 2 am, and we just wanted something cheap for the night - which it was, but I don't know the state of other hostels in Auckland to compare. Our first impressions at 2 am: supposedly a double room but the bed was like a 1 1/2 single. Ripped lace curtains, shabby walls, corridor, and outdated bathroom facilities. I won't say more - you get the idea. And the worst bit was (and not their fault) was that they're building another building in front of the hotel, and the jack hammers and drills and graders started at 7 am a few hours later, and further sleep was impossible. We did however have a view from our room of the Auckland Skytower, which made us feel a little bit better (when it stopped teeming with rain long enough for us to see it properly, which wasn't for another full 24 hours). The best part (and maybe only) good thing about this hotel is that it has its own restaurant downstairs, plenty of tourist info brochures so you don't need to immediately head to the Information Centre, and booking desk for tours and accommodation. This part of the service was absolutely fantastic and i can't rate them highly enough. We hadn't realized that 2 nights after our stay in Auckland, it was a long weekend and the town where we'd be would be likely to be booked out....the 2 booking staff spent 40 MINUTES phoning around not just that city but 2 others as well, searching for accom for us, and finally got us some, so we were extremely grateful.
The restaurant seems good, though we didn't try it. Convenient anyway, as it's a fair walk down Queen Street to a part which isn't as run down as this end, where there are nice restaurants and takeaways, etc. (this top end of Queen St we were in, really needs a 3 block makeover or something). Otherwise, Queen St is one of the main Streets of Auckland.
