Auckland Central Backpackers: ACB
  • Satisfaction:
  • Not to be confused with Auckland Bakcpackers central, the ACB as its better known is huge! Its New Zelands biggest with about 300 beds over 6 floors with a good bar/restaurant on the 7th floor! Dorms are pretty big, generally between 6 and 12 beds. They cost about $25. The bar on 7th floor does great cheap food, i can recommend the lasagne and chips!, and the beer comes highly recommended too! Its very central and they organise tours here and almost anything you need.

Auckland Central Backpackers: Handy to main Street of Auckland   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Satisfaction:
  • Auckland Central Backpackers or ACB is close to Queen St and a friendly place. Has comfortable dorm beds with resonable prices ranging from $22 plus a $10 key deposit. Also has job seeking and backpacker travelling staff on hand. The internet cafe/cafe is ok although places on the street may be closer and more useful ie messenger etc. Has a good chillout lounge area and 2 tv rooms. Kitchen and laundry facilites also with a good bar downstairs.

staff where friendly and some of the fellow backpackers where to.

    Auckland City YHA: City YHA
  • Satisfaction:
  • My first few days in Auckland I stayed at the Auckland City YHA just a block from Queens Street and 10 blocks from Sky City. The hostel was nice and the staff friendly, but prices were a bit high. However, in respect to other hostels in the area the prices were nice for what you receive in return. Tommy's Bistro is down on the lobby floor for breakfast. The hostel offers multishare, family, and twin rooms. The rooms themselves are very clean, but with little personality. During my stay it was difficult to find many people to converse with because they were out of the hostel doing other things, understandable. Overall I can't complain about my stay. The staff helped when they could and found help when they couldn't. Typical of the great YHA service.

3rd floor sky deck. Laundry, television lounge, elevators, 150 beds, Tommy's Bistro, Travel help, internet (expensive), and mini store. Limited view of the city but can see Sky City. Near K'rd and Queen Street. Short walk to main part of city. Quiet and remote.

Auckland City YHA: Auckland's other YHA
  • Satisfaction:
  • As part of my "Welcome to New Zealand" package with the working holiday, it included a 2 night stay at this YHA, which ended up being extended for another week or so... The hostel itself is not particularly noteworthy but is large enough and has enough facilities for its size. Laundry room, travel desk, lounge & dining area, kitchen, tv room, smoking deck, linen included, female-only dorms and a small breakfast & lunch cafe. The other travellers I met at the hostel made the stay memorable, in a good way! At least this hostel has windows in the rooms, unlike some hostels in Auckland.....

Some people had problems with checking in and reservations.. Also one big annoying thing is the steep hill from Queen Street to the hostel!! At the end of a busy day, a steep climb is the last thing you want to do... Also in the Auckland winter time, heaters may need to be rented because the building has no heat.

The hostel has a decent sized area for storage in the dorms. There are standard showers and washroom facilities on each floor, so if your floor's facilities are occupied, you can always try another floor.

The City YHA is close to K' Road (also the closest place to get groceries!) and somewhat close to the Auckland Domain, Hospital, and accessible to Queen Street.

I spent almost a week there. It's clean, modern and staff is friendly. It has a comfortable big place at the entrance, for sitting, making friends, eating, reading or surfing the internet. It's also quite cheap, and location is central. You can walk to the Ferry Building in 15 minutes, going down Queen Street.

    Good location, price, well kept.

Auckland International YHA: A Good Place to Start
  • Satisfaction:
  • This was the first hostel I stayed at in NZ and it left me with a good impression. It is centrally located and mere blocks from the heart of Auckland. It is right outside the shuttle to the airport and the staff is friendly and helpful.

Barrycourt Motel & Suites: Parnell Motel
  • Satisfaction:
  • This complex has standard motel accomodation as well as suites with great city views.

Sadly, I got to stay in the motel rooms so missed out on the city views from my rooms balcony.

The room was great, a small kitchenette consisting of fridge and microwave, toaster and kettle.

Cutlery and china and assorted cookware supplied.

Slept well with minimal outside noise.

Hotel restaurant and coffee house on site as well as conference facilites.

Withen walking distance to Parnell Village and a good stroll to Newmarket shopping district.

Free parking but it can get a bit tight, especially if the conference rooms are in use.

Brown's Bay Olive Tree Motel: Great base for long term stay
  • Satisfaction:
  • Browns Bay is a lovely part of Auckland and if you are spending a few days or a week in Auckland, this might be a nice area to make your base.

Stayed one night here in Jan 2004. The motel is quite out of the way and feels like a quiet retreat from the big city.

Browns Bay itself is a lovely coastal area with a glorious beach and a lovely shopping area.It has more of a small city feel and is a lovely place to spend some time.

The motel rooms are quite large .We had a 'Studio Queen' room.
The room was spacious and the real surprise was the large, fully furnished separate kitchen. Great if staying here for a while as you can do all your own cooking.

The shower / toilet area was sufficient and clean.

We slept well here with absolutely NO outside noise.
