4 nights in Auckland?

by baron1970

Hi!
I will be staying for 4 nights in Auckland in late February after staying for 3 nights in Sydney. I would appreciate if you could help me with the following questions for Auckland:
1- What's the weather going to be like?
2- We would like to see places where we can people watch and where locals gather
3- Local markets?
4- Must see places and attractions?
5- Nice restaurants not only with nice food but with nice atmosphere with locals as well
6- Any insider advice about seeing the most with the nature, wild animals etc.?
Thanks in advance

1. Normally the weather is settled and hot, but very humid in Auckland at this time of the year. Today even more humid because it is raining ;-))) If anyone could predict the weather properly we would all be highly paid meteorologists...

2. Viaduct Harbour, Ponsonby, Parnell, K Road, Newmarket...

3. Victoria Park Market - but not a market in the original sense, which would be a farmer's market. Just many shops, a bit touristy, and some cafés.

There is also a nice market behind Britomart named City Farmers Market.

Also close to the centre are the Auckland City Market and the Farmers Market in Parnell.

See more on this rather good website:

http://www.eventfinder.co.nz/markets-fairs/events/auckland

4. Please check on the VirtualTourist travel pages and also on www.aatravel.co.nz, or Lonely Planet online.

5. Too many to name - but I love Thai Friends in Parnell.

6. Please be advised that "wild animals" in New Zealand are mostly birds. The best place in AKL for this is Tiritiri Matangi which you easily reach by boat. Also the Zoo is good. You can see whales and dolphins on the Dolphin Explorer tours but sightings are not guaranteed. Penguins, fish incl. manta rays and sharks, at Kelly Tarlton's. Tips about this on my VT Auckland page.

Great advice already.
And just to add that I love to have lunch up the Skytower in Orbit restaurant so you can get great 360 deg views while the restaurant rotates.

Re-plant an Island!

by plant_girl

Motuihe Island is a small island in the Hauraki gulf that is being restored from farmland back to native bush. The island is one of Aucklands more popular recreation islands and has seen service as everything from a Maori pa site to a naval base, but there is currently no ferry service to the island, so volunteering on a planting day is a way to see somewhere that you wouldn't ordinarily get to. No experience is needed - just enthusiasm, somthing to drink and a little bit of lunch (a sausage in bread is provided for lunch!)

Plant a tree (winter) or do some nursery work (summer), look at the birdlife, or just chill out on the gorgeous beaches.

Giftware

by keeweechic

The store offers lots of giftware’s in the form of gemstones made up into a variety of jewellery pieces or in the form of vases and dishes. Admission is free to the gallery but there is small charge for visiting the museum which has an impressive collection of fossils which have been collected from all around the world. Visit via way of a elevator.

Location: Crystal Mountain, 80 Candia Road, Swanson, Waitakere, West Auckland

Link Bus

by keeweechic

The Link Bus ; circulates around the inner city area both clockwise and anticlockwise. The service will take you from the city to Newmarket, Parnell, Grafton, Karangahape Road and Ponsonby - all great areas for shopping and restaurants
