Work in Auckland

by derek6666c

Anyone know what the job scene in Auckland is like at the moment? Moving there in June.

Cheers

Re: Work in Auckland

I think you cannot generalise THE job scene. It all depends on the kind of jobs you would want to apply for, if they are sought after at the moment or not.

A guideline for jobs that are sought after would be on the Immigration website, in the category of Skilled Migrants. This list gets updated permanently - and can make you crazy, because sought after jobs are no longer sought after within a short time, always adapting to the latest figures of the market.

The recession is still full on, so if you are looking for a job that is not sought after the search can become very difficult.

Not knowing your background, I hope you have finalised all your visa requirements.

If you come on a Working Holiday Visa you might want to have a look at the Woofers website and student job search. As you arrive in June, this might also be more difficult than in summer when they search staff for cafés, farms, vineyards, and tourism.

Travel Tips for Auckland

Electricity Must Know & Airport Tax

by xuessium

ELECTRICITY
Like Australia, New Zealand uses the oblique flat blades with ground plug.

Voltage is 230V; Currency frequency is 50Hz.

AIRPORT TAX
New Zealand Airports impose an International departure tax of NZ$25 (circa May 08), to be collected separately from the air tickets. You can pay via cash or via credit cards. Look for the collection booths.

Volcanic Plug - Rangitoto

by leffe3

Just off the coast of Auckland is this volcanic cone that erupted from the sea some 600 years ago. Its virtually completely covered in lush vegetation and the peak can be seen from virtually anywhere in Auckland. You can tramp round the island or up to the rim of the volcano itself (or you can take a special day trip including transport to the top)

Connected by a causeway is Motutapu (in the foreground of the photo) - in complete contrast this is covered by grassland and is much gentler landscape.

3 ferries a day cross to Rangitoto from Auckland (and to spend any signifiant time you would need to catch the early morning one).

Westfield St Lukes

by keeweechic

This has become quite a large shopping centre in Mt Albert now, in fact one of the largest centres in NZ with approximately 148 retail stores over two levels. There is also a good food hall cinema complex and free parking.

I enjoyed shopping here even when it wasn't this big but it has been extended over the years and is very popular indeed.

Britomart Transport and Railway Station

by kiwi

The Britomart station in downtown Auckland is still under construction although it is open for business.
The services are basic and need to build up and grow. Auckland has not had good rail services up until now, so we hope that will change in the future.
The architecture of the station itself is well worth the visit. Very attractive and interesting. See more photos here.

Diablo

by fishandchips about Diablo

Diablo is one of many spots to eat on Ponsonby road. We stopped here at approx 9pm on a Tuesday night and got a seat easy. The service was good and the selection of wine & beer okay. The menu had all sorts of options with the Pizza probably the most popular dish. I had a make your own Pizza (you choose 4 toppings) and this was quite good. Not the best Pizza in town but good nontheless. The cost was $19.
