Private Function

by Janah.Moore

I was wondering how I would go about making a request for a private function in December? I'm interested in the Winter Gardens and I heard it was possible to organize them here.
Thank you.

You can read about the conditions of functions at the Wintergardens here:

As it is an Auckland City Council facility, I suggest you try to book your function by calling them or using the online contact:

Travel Tips for Auckland

Architecture in Parnell.

by kiwi

New Zealand is a very young country therefore is not really reknown for it's old architecture. Some places in the South Island have some history, however Auckland has very few examples of old buildings.
You can find a few in the Parnell area, and it's a very nice place to walk around.
There are nice shops, in a village setting, old wooden buildings. If you have the time, walk up the hill to the top and visit the cathedral which is more modern styling.

Gannet colony at Muriwai Beach

by Robdaz

If you have the time take a drive towards the west ,heading towards Kumeu where you can stop at a number of vineyards and head to Muriwai.

It is one of the nicest beach around and you get to see the Muriwai's gannet colony. It is a short walk from the beach car park to Takapu Wildlife refuge on Otakamiro Point. There are viewing platforms where you can get great views of the nesting birds.

Everything but elephants!

by allikat about The Elephant House

The Elephant House in Parnell is a fabulous treasure trove full of gifts and local crafts including everything from greenstone and paua jewellery (paua is a beautiful irridescent shell), wood carvings, totara fence post jars (a kiwi peculiarity!), paintings, pottery and clothing. If you're looking for a kiwi souvenir, but one that is just a little different than the tat that a lot of gift shops churn out, then the Elephant House is for you. Tucked away down an old narrow alleyway of Parnells main street, even its old fashioned surroundings are just a little bit special. Well, there are those totara fence post jars I mentioned....totara is a native timber, and some enterprising soul decided to put an old fence post on a lathe and fashion a jar out of the post. I have a lovely one myself (made by a friends son) which sits proudly on my bookcase. They come in all sizes, and the nice ones (like mine) have quite a bit of the rough wood still in evidence. Depending on the size you opt for, expect to pay anywhere between $25 ~ $55 NZD for a totara fence post jar.

Participate in a Lolly Scramble!

by ATXtraveler

One of the most unique things I saw in Auckland was what was known as a "Lolly-Scramble". During my drive with Kiwi, Sarah and Kiwi's Mum Morepork, we were driving toward the Skytower complex when we came across a group of people crossing every which way on the street, I asked what it was. Morepork explained to me that both sides of traffic actually get red lights, allowing people to criss-cross the street more quickly than making a square with the lights.

It became termed as a lolly-scramble because it looks similar to what would happen if you threw candy out for a group of kids and they all scrambled out to pick it up.

urban food with attitude

by TomorrowsAngel about Rocket Kitchen

Rocket Kitchen provided contemporary takeaway cuisine. Ranging from pre-cooked gourment meals, to birthday/wedding cakes. They sell a selection of gourmet ingredients and preserves/condiments. The chocolate whisky cake is really moist and lasts for 3-4 days without going stale - if it survives lol.
