Where to buy air tickets to travel out of Auckland?

by rock_on_ku

Hi - I asking this for a friend who just moved to Hastings, New Zealand. She want to buy air tickets from Auckland to Nepal. Is there a website like Expedia that caters to New Zealand locals? Or can you provide info on some local travel agents? For some reason, if you search for tickets on Expedia or Travelocity, the fares are coming out to be USD 5K which is ridiculous.

Thanks!!

Maybe if he knows which airlines flies from Auckland(the airport website will tell you), he could get their websites. Most major airlines sell tickets online, and some of them have good offers.

Hope this helps.

Well, usually the airlines website are more expensive than the travel sites and local agents. That's the reason. I got mine from US to Nepal for 1800 roundtrip for the same time ... was thinking she should get it for something similar or less price.

Yes, probably those sites offer good deals. I always check some of them(spanish sites...sorry not usefull for your friend) but I have joined some airline newsletter too...from time to time there are good prices there too.

On the website of the House of Travel you can check out and compare the prices of flights. However, from personal experience I know that you often get better deals when you contact the House of Travel personally.

Their website is:

www.hot.co.nz

Another such agency is United Travel:

In addition to the above suggestions, you can also try STA and Flight Centre, or Air New Zeland Holidays Store(their travel agent division not their reservations.

Fares especially from the carriers own website are not necessarily more expensive. They are subject to availability and could go up in a flash compared to tavel agents who pre-purchase from suppliers and therefore can supply same low price for a length of time until they have sold out. If you purchase your ticket direct from the airline early enough you'll find you'll get some really good fares. And it is true it pays to subscribe to a carrier for email updates, they do come out with good deals every now and then especially when they need to fill up undersold flights.

The advantage of going to a travel agent is that they can put together a complex fare/itinerary simply because they deal with a lot more suppliers, something that the airline can't or don't do.

Travel Tips for Auckland

Chinese building

by Kate-Me

I'm not exactly sure what this building is (though there is another red building very close by which is an Art Gallery) but I was really taken by it. It really stands out in the city among the more serious concrete and glass buildings.
You can find it near the intersection of Kitchener & Wellesley Sts in the city.

Goat Island Marine Reserve in Leigh

by Robdaz

This a protected area is near Leigh which is about half an hour drive from Warkworth north from Auckland. On the way you can stop at Warkworth for breakfast or lunch and their is a very nice winery cafe at Matakana.

You can swim/snorkle with mainly snappers and other fishes or if you preferred get on the glass bottom boat which goes round the island. Their is a nice picnic area and beach as well.

Westfield Downtown

by keeweechic

This shopping centre runs between Queens Street (the pedestrian end opposite the Britomart Transport Terminal) and Albert Street. A high proportion of customers are tourists especially during November to February. There is a large eating hall, souvenir and tourist stores as well as fashion shops and homeware stores covering two floors. There is also car parking via an overbridge to the Auckland City Council's Downtown carpark.

If this is not cost-effective...

If you are sick of walking and spot a bright red bus, just hop on it: It is the free City Circuit bus.

This bus is a red, hybrid electric public transport option. Each bus has 30 passenger seats and low floor access and wide entry/exit doors.

The bus travels along Queen Street down to Britomart on the waterfront, to Albert Park, Symonds Street and along Wellesley Street to the Sky Tower. The City Circuit operates seven days a week, every ten minutes between 8am to 6pm.

Chuck s Streakhouse & Fish restaurant

by keeweechic

As the name implies this is a Steak and fish restaurant. Some of the menu choices are, aged eye fillet steak served with a port wine jus, snapper served in a lemon butter and caper sauce, mussels in white wine, king prawns flambéed in garlic and chilli, served on rice. There are several choices of steaks, eye fillet, scotch fillet, T bone and sirloin, the salad bar is also included. Other choices are lamb, pork chops, chargrilled chicken and venison. Prices seem reasonable and service seems to be good on average.
