What to do early Sunday morning

by akltravel

We are arriving in Auckland about 5am on a SUNDAY morning in October and leave on another flight about 2 in the afternnoon. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do between 6am and noon?

You have to check back in for your next flight 2 to 3 hours before your departure, so factor this in to your times as well as the fact that it will take you an hour from the city in traffic to get back to the airport.

It all depends on what you like to do! There's a zoo, an aquarium, great restaurants, shopping, casino etc.

Skytower, Kelly Tarlton's, Victoria Park Market, coffee at Viaduct Harbour, Auckland Museum, Parnell...

As you will be in the city very early before all those attractions open... Have breakfast at Viaduct Harbour. You can walk to Albert Park (just up Queen Street, and then turn left). Walk or take a bus to the Auckland Domain (Museum). You can also take a bus to Mt. Eden or One Tree Hill to get a great view of the city and the harbour.

As there will be less buses on a Sunday I suggest you start your tour at Britomart (this is the central bus station next to the Ferry Terminal) and ask for all bus connections you would need. Or check out on line on:

You can walk or take a bus to lovely Parnell (near the Museum). On a Sunday it is posh to have brunch in Ponsonby.

You can also get on the Link bus that takes you to many top spots on a loop and costs only NZ$ 1.60.

In the city centre there is a free red bus (City Circuit).

Just looping around would give you a kind of overview of AKL. And on a Sunday there are no traffic jams, so you would get around rather quickly.

Also the bus trip from and back to the airport would be rather straight forward. If you have a domestic connection only it is good enough to be at the airport half an hour before departure. As you probably do not know the airport allow more time, and check your luggage in upon arrival already.

Travel Tips for Auckland

Guangzhou Sister City

by keeweechic

The Lantern Festival lasts 3 days and on the last night there is a fireworks display. In 2009, it marked the 20th anniversary of the Guangzhou-Auckland sister city relationship. The Guangzhou people gifted a lantern display to the people of Auckland.

Arataki Environmental & Heritage Centre

Overlooking the park is the Arataki Environmental and Heritage Center where there are displays of native flora and wildlife. Spectacular views can be seen of Auckland and Rangitoto from the Ranges.

The Loaded Hog,

by keeweechic

Right in the best location near Viaduct Harbour, the Loaded Hog is certainly popular with the food and beer always being good. There are large paintings of famous New Zealanders as well as antique farm implements on the wall for decoration. Their beer is brewed on site – Hog Gold Lager, Hog Draft, Hog Wheat and Hog Dark Ale which are all available on tap.

Thai?

by TomorrowsAngel about Sawadee Thai Cuisine

Experience traditional Thai dining or enjoy the ambience of the more western-style atrium. You can either sit in little hollowed out spaces or in the atrium which is filled with beautiful Thai artwork and decoration. There is also a special function room with private bar caters for groups needs.
The service is good considering the restaurant is always packed, and staff are polite. We always get the mixed entree platter which has: grilled satay chicken skewers, prawn patty with Thai herbs, chicken, onion and kumura in puff pastry, vegetarian spring rolls, fried corn fritters with sweet chilli sauce and money bags with prawn, chicken and Thai Herbs
Followed by pad pug taw hu which is stirfried fresh vegetables and tofu in a Thai sauce with crunchy onion on top. Its great served with the fresh Jasmine rice.
Then a nice pot of Jasmine tea to round off the evening.

Hammerheads Seafood Restaurant

by keeweechic

Hammerheads is along Tamaki Drive on the waterfront of Okahu Bay – about 5 mins from downtown. They have floor to ceiling windows to make full use of the wonderful view of the harbour. You can dine inside or out on the decks. They of course specialize in seafood but also have a range of vegetarian and non-seafood dishes to choose from. The restaurant has been featured in the ‘Best of the Best’ publications as being ‘one of the city’s best known restaurants’. They will cater for all types of functions and can seat over 200. There are also small intimate areas for the romantic dining as well. Children are also catered for with their own menu and a games sheet.

Open : 11:30am - midnight, 7 days
