June and July in the city........

by shivster13

Hiya,

My friend and I are arriving in Auckland in the beginning of June and staying until the end of July! We're both 21 year old females and hoping to get a job for the few weeks. We will have all our visa stuff organised as soon as we land! Hoping for something in a bar, waitressing etc. Anyone be able to give us some advice....we're also thinking of staying in the Queens Street Backpackers hostel for the duration....meant to be a good location!? Also we are open to staying elsewhere for the 2 months but a job is the main priority so that we can do some travelling at the end of the Summer. So just wondering in general for tips on where to stay(if you know somewhere better), where to socialise, good clothing shops and perhaps more importantly where our best shot of getting some work might be....:)

Anything at all would be appreciated,
Cheers:D

As you do not tell us in your profile about your nationality or country of residence I can only urge you not to take the visa matter too lightly, as your intention requires a Working Holiday Visa. See here:

http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/workingholiday/

Most people who want to do this apply before they come here because you might need health checks, and not only "as soon as we land".

Where to stay: depends on your budget. Of course, I would recommend the central city as public transport in Auckland is not really great, and most things happen in the CBD, and the party suburbs are easy to reach.

Shopping for clothes also in the CBD, Newmarket and Dressmart in Onehunga (free shuttle bus from Skycity).

Ads for work are often placed at the blackboard in hostels, also look in the daily newspaper (NZ Herald).

Travel Tips for Auckland

Nature

by aramat

All around Auckland there are beautiful green areas for locals and visitors alike. All those people walking with their kids or their dogs, cycling, rollerblading, etc. made the impression of a very leisurely society. I took this picture somewhere along Tamaki Drive.

UNITEC (formerly Carrington Hospital)

by keeweechic

This large group of buildings was once known as the Lunatic Asylum (or the ‘Whau’). It was built in 1865 from plans drawn up in England. At the time it was one of the largest buildings in the colony. In 1877 it was gutted by fire but fortunately the original drawings were kept and the hospital was reconstructed. In 1992 the hospital was closed by the Auckland Area Health Board and offered up for sale. The Carrington Polytec bought and refurbished the building and opened in October 1994 as the UNITEC school of architecture and design.

Shanghai in Auckland!

by rabbit06 about Shanghai Restaurant

This is just like being in downtown Shanghai with attentive staff and freindly managment. The walls are decorated with plenty of large photos from Shanghai such as the bund, oriental pearl tv tower, yu garden, old Shanghai and many others. You would not beleive this is in Auckland! Shirley just wants to eat everything as this is authentic Shanghai, the food she grew up on and just loves! me just check out that pepper sizzling beef.....just delicious!!
