The fee is determined by your bank not the ATM company here.
A percentage fee is steep and no way around it. You can't therefore take eg $1000 out to avoid smaller withdrawal fees.
I had French visitors and they both had different bank cards. One had a percentage fee and the other a set amount withdrawal fee. They discovered this by viewing the charges on their account via internet banking. I strongly recommend you get your credit card added to your internet banking to monitor this.

Maybe you could ask around and get what is called a Travel Card. It's a Debit Card in NZDollars, that you do the currency conversion before you leave Australia. Then the withdrawals are in kiwidollars. Check tho about the ATM fees for the withdrawals. This could well be a suitable option.
You don't tell us who you bank with. Is it a major bank?

Re: ATM Charges in AUCKLAND

I always withdraw cash with my (foreign) bank card and not with the credit card, as there is only a fee per transaction and not percentage. However, the daily limit in NZ is NZ$ 800. (Do not know if this is with all banks in NZ but surely with BNZ, and I think, I also encountered it with ASB. But Pam - kiwi - would know this...)

Oh yes you are right about the $800 limit per day, some machines are $700.

Go to the banks to get money.....no fees

I'm not sure that is necessarily correct information. A cash advance/withdrawal over the counter could likely still attract a fee. Depends on your own bank.

Yes I hope you do, and sure you will. Is it your first visit here?
Hope also that you come back to us with your experiences with ATMs and fees after you get home. IT's good to hear people's individual experiences.

Travel Tips for Auckland

Grey Lynn Festival

by keeweechic

The Grey Lynn Festival is held every year in November. A very popular event, there is music, food, shopping and the best ethnic exhibition you will find in Auckland. There is music from local bands and Polynesian choirs and the day runs late. Smaller stages with dance and solo performances are also available. Admission is free but you may wan to buy at some of the shopping stalls.

Monte Cecilia (formerly The Pah)

by keeweechic

This building was constructed on the highest point of what was the Whataroa Pa and was affectionally known as ‘The Pah’. Built between 1877 and 1879 in an Italiante style, there is a central tower with rounded windows. The interior features Italian marble mantelpieces, fine woodword and inlaid floors. The building is now owned by the Sisters of Mercy and part of it is used for emergency housing.

DFS Kiwi Products

by keeweechic

There is also an extensive range of NZ products which included woollen clothing, honey, kiwi fruits products, arts and gifts and of course all the All Black Football items/clothings you could possibly want.

There is also a foreign exchange on the 3rd floor which is open from 1.00pm – 10.00pm.

Don't Miss this Dim Sum Place

by Robdaz about Newmarket Chinese Kitchen

The decor is very simple but the food is great and staff friendly. Most of the patrons are chinese so you know it must be good. I usually go there for lunch if I am in this side of the city and have never drop in for dinner.

Opening hours:
Lunch 11:00am to 03:00pm.
Dinner 05:30pm to 10:00pm.
Monday to Friday. Dim Sum of course!

Considered a Local eatery

by kiwi about Portside Bar & Brasserie

Portside was a breath of fresh air. We had driven around the city and other popular eating areas only to find the place overcrowded and too busy for us to get a meal.
Stumbled across Portside, to find everything we needed and wanted. Parked right outside the restaurant. Wonderful view over the Viaduct Basin and some nice yachts! Amazingly friendly manager who's aim was to please, without being over patronizing.
Rudy you were great!! And we will always remember therefore we will return!! Had to be the local fish on the Daily special menu. The day I was there they served Hapuka and it was divine sitting on a bed of kumara mash.
