Hotel in Auckland, recommendations please?

by wandaling

Hi,
can anyone recommend an Auckland hotel, central, but not too noisey, it's only for 2 nights at the end of our trip, were not the age for clubs and bars, just want to see the city in the daytime and have a good nights sleep, probably a 4 star
or unless you know one that fits the bill, but less grading, thanks if anyone can help.

I always recommend the Parnell City Lodge, also known as Parnell Village Motor Lodge because I love lovely Parnell. You can walk to the city centre or take the bus, Auckland Museum is just a stonethrow away, and it is rather quiet.

(Tip on my VT Auckland page)

There is another hotel/lodge just around the corner in Gladstone Road which is super quiet and really nice. They have a 2 min video on their website, so you can see what you get. I have the feeling you would like this one ;-)

Another one in Parnell Road is the Parnell Inn:

Last time we stayed at the Kingsgate in Gladstone Road. It was very nice and even has an outdoor swimming pool, but I thought 5 minutes further up the hill would have been nicer, as there are no restaurants (apart from the hotel restaurant) at close range. But still it is only a 10 min walk to the heart of Parnell, and there is a bus stop right in front of the hotel.

I just spent 4 nights at the Duxton Hotel which is a short walk to the centre of the city. It was very nice for the price see www.wotif.com for a good rate.
The restaurant is very expensive in fact way over priced but there are plenty of restaurants nearby if you like Japanese, Korean, Indian or Thai and the room that I had did have cooking facilities anyway.

Well, the location of the Duxton is not bad. But wotif is only for short-term reservation, and even on wotif it costs $ 150 to 180...

Travel Tips for Auckland

All Night Entertainment

by keeweechic

There is also non stop entertainment at the festival up until around 10.30 at night both from local talent and overseas including China. There are stalls of arts and crafts which you can either admire or buy.

Hundreds of colourful brightly lit lanterns in all shapes and sizes adorn trees and posts through the park. Many or most, of which come direct from China.

Amble through Eden Garden.

by worldkiwi

The Eden Garden is a privately operated garden open to the public on the slopes of Auckland's largest mainland volcano, Mt Eden. The garden occupies an abandoned quarry and was developed from 1964. Today it is full of pleasant walkways through shady groves of native and exotic trees. There is a nice cafe to refuel in.
It costs NZ$5 to enter.
The garden is situated in Epsom, a central city suburb. Its address is 24 Omana Avenue. Public buses stop nearby.

Cock and Bull

by fishandchips about Cock and Bull Newmarket

The Cock and Bull is a pub of some reknown with a great selection of its own brewed beers. I first tasted beer from the Cock and Bull at the Malthouse in Wellington when sampling Epic and Monks Habit - two of the Cock and Bull's best known brews. They have also created a typical english draught beer called the Fuggles. It's warm and flat - just like the poms prefer it?

The pub itself is quite large and has lots of seating space including stand ups and couches. There is also a good selection of meals and nibbles though I have only had the spicy wedges so can't provide much insight into what's best.

If you are no sure what to drink you can ask for a taster of whatever beer you want. A great way to find a beer of your choice! It's Newmarket so smart casual at the very least.....

Dinner Theatre with a difference

by Dodo22 about Finalie Restaurant and Cabaret

If you are looking for a great night out with a group of friends, its hard to go past "Finale Restaurant and Cabaret". It is dinner theatre with a twist - a drag queen show which is absolutely excellent.

Shows are on Wednesday through to Saturday nights for dinner only. Dinner is a 3 course buffet - soup, followed by a selection of hot meats and chicken, vegetables and salads. Desert and coffee were also included
