Central location, typical hostel

Staff is friendly, location is key, very livey place. It is a typical hostel, not extremely clean or nice, but adequate for the price. Internet is available in the lobby, which is open 24-hours.

We stayed in the self-catering flats. These werer OK, but things are a bit worn.

Home away from Home

The Fat Camel Backpackers in downtown Auckland is an ideal base when arriving to New Zealand.
It is extremely popular with English, Irish and German travellers, and caters to those with a budget.
They have 4bed,6bed,8bed and 10bed dorms, as well as Double rooms. All reasonably priced. Do note that off season rates are lower.
Positives about the Fat Camel Hostel:
-Quiet despite bar being downstairs
- Global Gossip Internet
- Clean rooms & bathrooms
- Apartment style layout
- Tour Desk
- Cool staff
- Great location, within 3minutes walk of Sky Tower and harbour walk.
- Reasonably priced
- Evening activities to help you make friends
- Free evening meal ($4 upgrade available)

Negatives
- Small fridges in apartments
- Can be impersonal at times

Overall the Fat Camel is an ideal choice, a bus from the airport takes you straight to the hostel for under $8.00
Magic Bus & Kiwi Experience stop outside to pick up and drop off.

Unique Quality: Apartment style accommodation
Great for meeting travellers

Best Hostel ever

I had an absolutley amazing time here. The staff were always helpful and a lot of fun. The hostel itself is unique in that it's got apartments with their own kitchen and bathroom facilities and a small lounge area. Each apartment has about 5 rooms (some apartments are purely doubles, most have a mixture of dorms and doubles) and because of this you can easily meet other people, and if you don't like the people in your apartment you're sure to find some in the bar where fantastic activities go on every night.
When I was there, there was a guy chained to the bar and he ended up being interviewed on nightline (late night news programme).
You can't help but enjoy yourself here as long as you can accept that this is a slightly older hostel so there is a bit of wear and tear to the furnishings!!

Unique Quality: The apartment style accommodation is totally unique.
Fort Street is definately a colourful part of town (but not as much as K rd)

Auckland's Best Hostel

Fantastic hostel centrally located on Fort Street just off the main drag of Queen Street in Central Auckland. Apartment style hostel so each apartment has its own facilities including kitchen, lounge area, toilets and showers with a mixture of dorms connecting off the lounge area. The is an excellent tv lounge and good washing facilities.........bar down the stairs just beside the reception area and you can get a free meal every night, it is small but you can upgrade by paying a supplement and always a tasty alternative than cooking yourself. As so centrally located then there is a huge choice to eat out if free meal does not take your fancy...........!! Clean, friendly hostel and due to the apartment style rooms, easy way to meet your fellow backpackers.......................

Unique Quality: Apartment style rooms;
huge tv room with sky;
centrally located;
free meal every night;
personal smallish hostel which in my view beats a huge unpersonal hostel any day of the week.............
