What is the name of the restaurant on Mount Eden??

There is a kiosk on Mt Eden which used to sell food but is not operating as such now. Perhaps you are thinking of the Sorrento in the Park, on One Tree Hill?

Re: Restaurant name

by DawnHowarth

I remember you passed the carpark of the restaurant on the way down from MtEden.
It had spectacular views over Auckland city. Is that the one you think is closed?

The Kiosk was never really a restaurant, more a cafe. When were you last there?
You can paste this url into your browser and view the map. Change the setting to "SAT" to view satellite pic.
I can see the Kiosk and yes it had a great view.

If you hang around for a moment, I'll post a photo on an album on my homepage.

OK scroll down on my homepage (click on my name "kiwi" to get to my homepage) and near the bottom you will see an album called "Mt Eden Kiosk".

Re: Restaurant name

You are wonderful. Thank you.
Do you know any other affordable buffet-style lunch places I could take Oz tourists on Thursday?

Restaurant name

by kiwi

Well I don't know what you call affordable, but be sure to take your visitors up Mt Eden anyway for the free views.
Hmmm, I found lunch up the Orbit Restaurant in Skytower was a good deal. They had a $35 special / head and although that may sound expensive, remember you get discounted parking and free ride up the skytower included in that.
There are many places to eat, Devonport ; Tamaki Drive (the beaches along there); Newmarket; etc etc. All not exactly cheap.
My personal favourite is the Waterfront Cafe, which is much cheaper than the nearby Viaduct Basin eateries in Downtown Ak.
Check my tip but go to the website for current prices as mine may be out of date.

The Valentines buffet restaurant are ok and good value. I once had lunch at the outlet in Western Springs but there is also one at Mt. Eden:

Good suggestion, I don't do buffets a lot. Was trying to think of one with a view.
Main hotels in downtown have buffet restaurants, many with a view. Not sure of prices tho :-)

Re: Restaurant name

I do not do a lot of buffet restaurants either but we were invited to Valentines in Western Springs, and I was even surprised at how good the quality was. Service staff were great, and the food was really cheap, I think it was between NZ$ 20 and 25 pp, incl. coffee/tea.

Travel Tips for Auckland

City of Sails

by fishandchips

Auckland is built on a narrow isthmus so is surrounded by water. As a consequence water sports are very popular here given the easy access to lots of great places. A view back to Auckland city from tamaki drive shows the expanse of water with lots of boats.

Point Chevalier

by keeweechic

Pt Chev (as it is known) is a suburb west of the city. Situated on a triangular shaped peninsular, the suburb was at one time a military encampment during the NZ Wars of the 1860’s and was named after musketry instructor, Captain G.R. Chevalier. Pt Chev beach is popular today as it was during the inter war period for families to picnic during the summer although the tramlines have gone now . There are several parks in the area, Coyle Park, Walker Park and the Eric Armshaw Reserve. You can obtain a great view of the Auckland Harbour Bridge and Rangitoto from this peninsular area – although nicer when the tide isn’t out.

Atrium On Elliott

by keeweechic

The Atrium on Elliott is just behind Queen Street up by the Civic end. The centre provides hairdressing salons, sport stores, bars, café’s and food stores as well as clothing, eyeware, gifts, home and garden and jewellery stores.

MOTAT Tram

by keeweechic

The tram runs from Motat, past Western Springs Park to the Auckland Zoo and return. The tramway is Auckland’s only operating tramway and only one of four left in New Zealand. The journey travels about 1.1km each way. Stopping points are at the main entrance to Motat, Motions Road corner and the Auckland Zoo and there is a request stop situated midway along the Western Springs Park edge on Great North Road. Departure times are every 20 mins and there is a small fee.

Operating : Weekends and Public Holidays 10.00am - 4.45pm, Weekdays 10.00am - 4.00pm

Location : Motat, Great North Road, Western Springs

Best Thai in Auckland

by fishandchips about Sawadee Thai Cuisine

Sawadee is one place to make sure you visit when in Auckland if you like Thai food. The service here is great and the selection excellent. I came here once on Halloween and the waitresses were all dressed up as Vampires & Witches. The inside of the restaurant is decorated with lots of Thai themed pictures, carvings and photos.

Once we had ordered the food came out really fast. It was really delicious and there was lots of it. On my first visit I had the beef and chicken with veges dish and it was great. My second time here I had the Massaman Curry which was minced chicken, medium hot and with veges. Really nice.
