car rental in Auckland
by pcsuecd
Just found this site. We are arriving on Mon. Feb 25. It seems that we can only rent a car for 3 days over the internet, and we are only going to there for 2. We have tried the McDonald's , as it came with good reviews, but they have nothing available. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!!!
car rental in Auckland

At this late stage it's just a matter of going through all the companies and seeing who has a vehicle available. This is a busy time of year.
Go to this page and click on "show all listings":

Good luck and welcome to VT!

Try Ace Cars, they have offices at the airport and in the city (Parnell), and I have made good experience with them on many occasions:

If you are not lucky with them please have a look at my NZ page, I have listed more companies with good rates in the transportation tips.
Travel Tips for Auckland
Highest Jump 192m from Sky Tower
by muriwain
It is the highest base jump in the world, gives you a great buzz, you go up the Tower to Level 53 (192m) jump off - You can be stopped midair at main viewing platform so someone can take a photo and then they let you go down to the ground. You get a certificate afterwards showing you have done it.
Explore North Head.
by worldkiwi
North Head is the small upturned pudding bowl hill at the tip of the North Shore peninsula. You can drive here or walk to the head from Devonport. The hill is riddled with tunnels and gun emplacements, dating back to the late 1800s, when authorities feared a Russian invasion. This fanciful folly led to the construction of gun emplacements to protect the entrance to Auckland's Waitemata Harbour. During both World Wars, the fortifications were extended. Today, you can explore the hill and the tunnels, though, when I was there in March 2006, the tunnels were closed to the public.
This is a nice spot for picturesque marine views of Auckland and the inner Hauraki Gulf. Aucklanders like to picnic here on the weekend.
Cuba Cocktail Lounge and Bar
by keeweechic
Also known as Cigar Emporium, Cocktail Lounge and Piano Bar. They say they are NZ’s only piano bar but I’m not sure about that but they certainly were the first cigar bar in Auckland. They have live performances in the piano bar three nights a week (Tues, Wed & Thurs) from 9.00pm until late and the place is usually pack on most weekends and after work during the week. Cigars of course are the main item of interest, the lounge area also has one of NZ’s largest selections of cognac’s, ports and of course, cigars. They are also available for private functions.
Vivace
by fishandchips about Vivace
Vivace is a classy spot for a meal on High St - the small street running parallel to Queen St. The restaurant has several different areas including main room, balcony and private area so your experience can be taylored as desired.
The prices here are higher than average as is the wine list which starts at approx $32 a bottle so not a place to come if you are on a tight budget. We started with a Pencarrow Chardonnay (okay) & then tried a really nice Cab Sav though I forget which one!
The service we had was very good with our waitress there if we needed. The speed of getting meals out was good, especially given that the place was full. On that note, make sure you book a table!
Once you have finished dining there is a nice bar area to relax at and it has an open fire if the temperature is a bit chilly. I had a lamb dish wixh was great. It needed a side serving of veges to make it complete. Between the four of us we ordered 3 different sides so had a good selection of roast spud, egg plant & salad. The others had pizza, rissotto & beef - all made positive comments on their choices.
Black Volcanic Beach
by savvygirl
Karekare Beach is a black volcanic beach on the Tasman sea just west of the Waitakere Mtn. ranges about an hour from Auckland. It is an absolute stunning, somewhat hidden beach that has a dramatic presence to it. Karekare Beach is famous for its appearance in the film The Piano and is surrounded by forests, cliffs, raging surf, streams, dunes and black sand. The weather is irrelevant to this location as you can go there in any element (rain, sun, clouds) and still be stunned by the dynamic beauty of the ocean.
