Get great views from a ferry.
by worldkiwi
I took this photo on 19 November, 2004 on the ferry home from Auckland after a one day course in the city (I don't actually work in town). You can see the beautiful old Ferry Building on the left (the orange coloured building) and ferries coming and going from the ferry terminal and other piers along Quay Street. It's a very short walk from the Ferry Building to the bus terminal and Britomart rail station.
Wintergardens in Auckland Domain
by vtveen
Auckland Domain, a huge park not too far away from downtown, is situated on one of Auckland's volcano’s. At the top, near the building, you have a wonderful view over the city and Hauraki Gulf.
Off course it has its famous War Memorial Museum (an absolutely must see activity), but not far away, in the middle of the wonderful gardens, you will find the two greenhouses.
They are a heritage of the Auckland Exhibition of 1913. Nowadays the greenhouses are full of colourful flowers and green (sub)tropical plants.
Between the two buildings is a lovely pond. Next to the Winter Gardens is a special ‘fern park’.
Parnell Quality Crafts
by kiwi about Elephant House Crafts Ltd
I found in this shop a big array and large selection of very nice souvenirs of New Zealand. All sorts of bits, large and small. Native wooden bowls, Merino woollen garments, craft made toys, postcards, jewellery, something for everyone. Even possum skin items, bags and scarves etc. Remember possum skin helps protect our native bush and fauna and also our protected kiwi birds. These animals are a major problem in our wilds, therefore killing for their skins is encouraged. As mentioned already there is something for everyone here, large or small. If you fancy to pay big money for craft items you can pay $4000 for a large lamp or if you only want to spend $1 on a tiny bumble bee or postcard, you can. I found the price of the native wooden turned bowls reasonable compared to similar items around the country. $1 to $4000 kiwi dollars!!
Stagecoach Buses
by keeweechic
Stagecoach is the company that also operates the Link Bus service in Auckland. They are the larges bus operator in NZ and their cities also include Wellington and Lower Hutt. The company actually derived from Perth in Scotland by a brother and sister but has since moved into the UK, USA and New Zealand.
Stagecoach also have a controlling interest in Fullers (the ferries) in Auckland. Today they currently operate 900 buses and 8 ferries in New Zealand. Many of the buses in the outer suburbs you will see as being Stagecoach. For timetables of buses in areas you are staying or wanting to visit go to link below.
Great food, waterfront location!
by worldkiwi about Waterfront Café
This busy and laid-back restaurant is situated in the heart of downtown Auckland's waterfront restaurant area.
At a July 2005 mid-winter get-together there we all had excellent dinners that were prepared well and speedily.
The restaurant is a good place to meet before a night on the town, but not really a place for a quiet chat. There is a long bar in the restaurant and indoor-outdoor seating. I can recommend the sirloin steak in mushroom sauce. It comes with nicely roasted vegetables and somewhat incongruosly (for the middle of winter), a green salad.
