Lovely rooms, good value
by briarlyn
The rooms and hotel in general were nicer than expected, and service was good. While this hotel may not have been as fancy as five stars found elsewhere, it was great by Auckland standards. I would definitely recommend people pay the bit extra to stay in the Skycity Grand as opposed to the regular Skycity hotel across the road, particularly if you use a website to get a good deal. Easy access to casino and other venues in Auckland city, and you can normally get package deals with entrance to the spa facilities, or meals / drinks at the many restaurants and bars in the complex.
Unique Quality: One of the newest and nicest hotels in Auckland, great views of the sky tower, fantastic location.

Kiwi - Las Vegas !
by WStat
When approaching Sky City Hotel it doesn`t look that big; as soon as one reaches its giant entrance-hall, rememberances of a mixture of Las Vegas Hotels, railway-stations and casinos come into the mind!
At Sky City everything is gigantic: above all the 328 m Sky Tower, the entrance hall of its 2 hotels taking several floors, the choice of 10 restaurants and bars and 2 casinos. The whole building hustling and bustling and everything crowded with guests, tourists, visitors, businesspeople and staff.
Sky City Hotel is the somewhat less luxurious compared to the 2nd, Sky City Grand. Amenities are plenty, rooms large (but partly needing some refurbishment dearly) and the other facilities excellent, as a heated rooftop pool, a Sauna and Gymnasium. Staff are helpful, but not as friendly as could be expected from a 4-star house. Restaurant and breakfasts are expensive (straight across the street are some very good coffee-shops !)
Unique Quality: Centrally located at the rim of Aucklands business- and shopping-district, in about 15 minutes walking distance to the harbour. Access to the Sky Tower is prohibitively expensive, yet offers breath-taking views for more than 80 kilometres in every direction. So if one doesn`t mind to stay at a railway-station / Las Vegas - like hotel, its the right place !

wicked!

we checked into this hotel on a Christmas afternoon last year. when it reached evening, me, my sister and my cousins decided to brave the cold weather and go swimming(most shops were closed anyway). so we ran to the pool dressed in normal t-shirts and berms(didn't have our swimsuits and trunk) and ran into the staff there. actually no one's supposed to swim without swimming gear...but he went like "oh what the heck its christmas doesn't matter anyway" that's what i call the christmas spirit man! at night the skycity tower is lighted up and its this beautiful neon green colour! it was such a refreshing time! there was also this bungy jump you could do at the tower! the rooms are great and when you want some fresh air you can just step out onto the space outside your room and take a breather! i would definitely recommend this hotel to stay if one is in auckland!

The one place that never shuts!
by fpb72
A really good quality hotel, right in the heart of the CBD!
Rooms were LARGE with king size beds, and all the mods cons one would expect! Staff were fantastic - extremely helpful & always professional, as too were complex staff in general.
The hotel itself is within the Skycity Complex - consisting of the Casino & the Sky Tower itself, so guest have the addition of being on the doorstep so to speak. In the atrium, is the one stop shop for all tourist info - the ISITE store - which contains information on everything you could posssibly want to know about!
Directions: At the base of the Sky Tower!

There is a rooftop heated swimming pool and a health and fitness centre with sauna.

An ordinary hotel at best
by TripAdvisor Member Thorndon
Sky City Grand is five star. How do I know - when you stay they keep telling you that it is grand and five star. Such facts should be obvious and not need to be said. In fact this is a near-new hotel with facilities which reach (mostly) a five star standard. However service was never better than adequate, often worse. Room servicing over three nights was variable in standard and erratic in timing. Room broadband did not work, neither did one light until plugged in elsewhere, and design/specification errors meant the shower soaked the bathroom and the cheap minibar fridge rumbled through the night. Such things come with 3 star status, but not five. I paid $50 extra per night for "Club" status. A card listed a number of Club benefits. In fact the private buffet breakfast did not exist - taking it at no added cost in the Cafe meant joining every other guest. The "Club" is a 7th floor room with some seats, a few magazines, and little else. During the day it seems to be a route for cafe staff to come and go - laughing, noisy, under-employed, and clearly with no idea of what a Club is. They wandered through continuously in the hour I was there. You'll be OK staying here, but you won't remember it - unless you win in the casino across the road which runs the Hotel and perhaps offers a completely different experience to guests who have come to bet.
Nice but overrated

Ideal location we paid NZ$160 with no breakfast. only stayed one night before leaving for a trip south. They did keep our excess luggage for us while we were away for four days. Inroom internet did not work, but there was complimentary internet in the Business centre which was ideal. On our return the staff advised us re booking internal flights in fact they done it for us and delivered our tickets to the hotel we were staying in near them. Our view was not very nice it was looking into an office block - i think!. They do over emphisise the grand and five star bit it was comfortable, with a noisy mini bar and an all purpose shower/bathroom floor which I din't like. Over rated and over priced
GREAT PLACE
by TripAdvisor Member wensa27
My husband myself my parents and my mother in law stayed here 4th may 2006. when we arrived we were told our room wouldnt be ready till 3pm. bear in mind we arrived at 6 30 am. with 3 pensioners with us we needed our rooms following a 12 hour flight. there were no rooms until my husband said he'd pay for a room when miraculously there were 2.we got to see the manager eventually and ststed our case, got our money back that my husband had paid, and also got our rooms well before 3pm as we'd been told. after all the hassle we had a great 4 days there, no problems whatsoever. great clean rooms, food excellent, sevice excellent. very very good place to stay.
Excellent place to stay

Stayed at the Sky city on our last night in New Zealand after a campervan holiday. We stayed in a executive room with 2 double beds. These were so roomy. 2 x flat screen TV's, large bathroom facilities, seperate dining/lounge area. It was very roomy and well above the space of a normal hotel room - excellent for a couple with 2 children. Rooms were very clean and tidy. Mini Bar in room. Noise was not a problem. Close to all city facilities. Plenty to see and do within complex

Transport

I will be staying at the Skycity hotel Auckland for two days, prior to cruising NZ and Oz. Can anyone tell me about the best and cheapest transport from the Airport to Skycity and from Skycity to the cruise terminal in Auckland?

There is a free shuttle bus which departs from the airport every 20 minutes or so that will get you to Sky City. You can walk to the cruise terminal from there, but I'm guessing you might not want to do that if you have a heavy case - if so, check with the staff there who can arrange the short transfer. Enjoy your stay!
Re: Transport

Sky City isnt too far from the cruise terminal so just catch a taxi to save the hassle with your bags.
Re: Transport

Take the airbus from the airport it's only $15 one way and will drop you right at the hotel. Here's the link...
