Right from the second that we turned into Ponsonby Tce we new The Great Ponsonby was superbly located. We didn't even feel we were in a big city it was so relaxed and quiet, yet we were close enough to the city that we could be anywhere in a matter of minutes, and even better, if we wanted to leave the car behind we were right in amongst the buzz of Ponsonby which we could explore on foot. I Have to be honest - this isn't what I expected from staying in the heart of Auckland, but this trip blew any preconceived fears i had from childhood visits completely out of the water.

The Great Ponsonby truly was a sight for sore (driving) eyes. It looked like a home away from home. There's nothing pretentious about this place at all and everything just feels right. For a Kiwi boy living in Australia, this was the fix of culture that I needed to make me feel back at home.

We were greeted by our hosts and after settling in and unpacking we enjoyed a quiet drink with Gerry who gave us the run down answering every possible question we could fire at him. From the beautiful art and books we could indulge in at the GP, to recommendations how we could best spend our time in Ponsonby and Auckland. Our hosts certainly helped us to achieve the best out of our time, and we could tell from the many friendly conversations they had with other guests during our stay that we weren't the only ones to benefit from their knowledge of the area.

Now for myself and my partner who both couldn't fault the location, the rooms, the amenities, the hosts and their hospitality there was also something else that made us fall in love with the GP which can't go unmentioned and that was the wonderful staff. They were ALWAYS so friendly and helpful and really made us feel relaxed. We couldn't say a thank you to our hosts Gerry and Sally without an equally big thank you to everyone who works hard in the background. From their smiles to their morning chats, we loved them all.

Unique Quality: Anything we could have wanted in a room was provided. I loved the bathroom!! The designer fittings, the beautiful tiles to the use of Eco cleaning products, these put the GP right at the top of my list. Everything and anything we could have required in the kitchen was there for us to use and although we didn't eat in, they certainly came in handy for romantic picnics. We couldn't have been more spoilt for entertainment - from the TV and DVD player (and they have a huge selection of GREAT DVD's to choose from) to your private audio system that can take your iPod and free wireless internet connection. We loved it all - and if you like to read while you relax.. then this is the place for you. The collection of literature is just mind blowing and if you're not sure where to start, Gerry can definitely give you some great recommendations. Although a great spot to relax and read was on our own table a chairs directly outside our room, I certainly had my eye on a couple of reclined chairs at the side of the house which were surrounded by beautiful plants and lightly shaded by a large place.... next time we'll have to stay for longer so we can take advantage of ALL the GP's offerings. So much to do and too little time. Oh well, there's always next time :)

So from Jason and Jemma - "THANK YOU ALL" we loved every moment of our stay and would never hesitate in recommending it to anyone heading your way.

PS - The Breakfasts are AWESOME!!!! and the chef is A++ the GP is a great start and finish to every day you spend in the Auckland region. You won't want to miss this one.

At the Pulse of the City

by A TripAdvisor Member

As two Kiwis living in Hong Kong, but who return to Auckland on a regular basis, it is a prerequisite for us to have a welcoming and extremely comfortable place to come back to. The Great Ponsonby B&B is just that place. Sally & Gerry are fonts of knowledge when it comes to the immediate area and Auckland as a whole. They can arrange transport and just about anything else you need. The long staying staff are friendly and welcome regulars back with a warmth that is rare in such establishments. The range of rooms/suites available, means there is something to suit the needs of any weary traveler. The d├ęcor has a Pacifica ambience and will brighten any day. Each morning starts with a scrumptious home cooked breakfast offering a variety of fresh Kiwi fare. Ponsonby is a vibrant inner city area with cafes, restaurants and interesting shops galore. The City link bus nearby, makes the whole city easily accessible from this location. We have been frequenting The Great Ponsonby B&B for five years and look forward to our next visit.

Fabulous Hospitality

by A TripAdvisor Member

The owners of this bed and breakfast were wonderful. My husband and I and another couple arrived from Canada very early in the morning after travelling for 24 hours. We were allowed to check into our rooms early (about 8 hours) which allowed us to freshen up and get some sleep. The owner (Gerry) of the Great Ponsonby B&B greeted us in the afternoon and helped us plan a couple of days of touring just outside the immediate Auckland area. His advise was fantastic and made our travelling a lot more efficient. His wife Sally and her able crew provided wonderful breakfasts. The hospitality and accommodations at this B&B are exceptional. Would return and definitely would recommend it to anyone going to Auckland.

Great B&B

by A TripAdvisor Member

After reading several web site contents on where to stay while in Auckland I decided to plumb for The Great Ponsonby B&B as reviews were very favourable.

Being a rather sceptical type I wasn't going to hold my breath and expect the earth, but I must say it lived up to everything that was said about it.

The two people who run the show ( Sally & Gerry ) are great hosts. Very friendly and helpful without being intrusive. They have a range of rooms at differing tarrifs. We had the standard room which was very smart, clean and well equipped so I can only imagine what the other suites were like.

Breakfast was lovely with a smashing choice.

A very comfortable communal lounge with a well stocked bar which operates on a trust basis. It is also stocked with books and a large collection of musical cd's if you want to chill a bit.

They helped make our stay in NZ most enjoyable even letting us leave our cases and valuables at the B&B while we went away on tours some lasting 3 days.

Just a nice distance from the city centre ($10-$12 taxi) or a 20 min walk.

In short don't bother looking anywhere else, this place is a one stop shop.

The nicest B & B we stayed in while in NZ

Thank you Gerry & Sally. The reviews say it all and it was definitely a highlight of our stay in Auckland. The apartment (The Blue Room) had everything we needed and didn't. All the little extra touches made it feel very much like home away from home. Both Gerry & Sally were a wealth of local information and were most obliging in helping us find our way around Auckland. They organised a table at a really nice local restaurant for New Year's Eve which we shared with other strays from around the world, but felt very much included with the local people. Most memorable New Year's Eve. Loved it so much had planned to stay there again on the last leg of our journey back to Australia but sadly emergencies arose and did not get the opportunity to go back to Auckland. Would definitely stay there again.

Graet Time at Great Ponsonby

by A TripAdvisor Member

We spent one night in Auckland at the Great Ponsonby Hotel before flying back to to England having had a great couple of weeks in New Zealand.

The owners Gerry and Sally could not have been more helpful and were full of good advice about where to go and what to see in the Auckland area. Without their help we would not have made the most of our short stay in Auckland.

Our room was very comfortable and everything had been thought of. Sally's breakfast was delicious and set us up very well for the day.

We have no hesitation in recommend this excellent institution for anyone wishing to spend some time in Auckland

Matchless experience!

Frankly this place redefines everything that a "bed and breakfast" is all about. Just splendid in all respects - location, building, room, food, hospitality. I was very, very impressed and recommend it enthusiastically...

You can't go wrong!

..with the Great Ponsonby! We enjoyed our one night stay and had Room 1 which is on the front with a small porch. It was lovely! Sally and Gerry were most welcoming with tea/coffee and cookies served as soon as we arrived. Gerry also sat down with us and went over our driving itinerary and gave us maps to help us along (it was our first night of 3 weeks in New Zealand. Since we had only one day in Auckland Gerry was again very helpful suggesting and then arranging a ferry ride out to Rangitoto Island and a trip called "The Volcanic Explorer". They have 10-12 rooms at the Great Ponsonby so things sometimes seem very hectic with people coming and going. It can be a very busy place! The breakfast are excellent and you have a choice of hot (lots of cereal, fruit etc provided). We chose the eggs benedict and Gerry's omelet..both very good. We would recommend this small inn.

The Best of the Best B&B's in Auckland

by TripAdvisor Member Rocconoah

After ending our cruises we always like to wind down in the city we disembark before taking a long flight home. We are a group of 10 and to find a B&B that can accommodate all of us can be trying. Our rooms were large and so very comfortable. Sally and Gerry were wonderful hosts. Just loved sitting on the patio and veranda. Sally's breakfasts are gourmet. Self-served beverages available throughout the day and night in the living room. Also, use of laptop without charge. Gerry has wonderful stories and extremely helpful with suggestions and directions. If you are planning to stay in Auckland make sure you book in advance as they are a very popular B&B for returning guests. I hope that if we travel to Auckland again The Great Ponsonby is defintely our home away from home.

Grat location, gorgeous house, nice & quiet

by A TripAdvisor Member

This is possibly the best small hotel we have ever stayed in - so much more than just a place to sleep. It is off Ponsonby Rd so is really quiet, got a great night's rest which is exactly what we wanted after a long flight (really comfortable beds!). (we've previously stayed on Ponsonby Rd but it was much too noisy with cars and buses going past all night). It's hard to believe this peaceful little spot is in the middle of one of the most exciting parts of the city, just a minute's walk from some excellent restaurants & bars.

Plus the engaging hosts are incredibly warm and knowledgable, and always ready with some interesting conversation, whether you want to talk about local wine, politics, NZ history or culture. The breakfasts are impressive as well, with everything from smoked salmon scrambled eggs to sweet crepes, with homemade yoghurt and fresh fruit salad (even local poached fruit made from their very own trees and yummy NZ manuka honey!). Couldn't have asked for better, will definitely visit again.
