Another nice place (beaches and a gannet colony) is Muriwai.
See for instance (or VT pages/tips): http://www.coast2coastnz.com/?page_id=143
Or Piha with its famous surf beach (and black sand)
I really doubt if there are public buses to these towns.
happy travels

There is no public transport to Karekare Beach. The only black sandy West Coast beach with shuttle service is Piha Beach. But shuttles are very limited (only two per day). See here:
http://www.surfshuttle.co.nz/
To get to Karekare Beach is quite an undertaking if you do not drive yourself. Best you take the public bus to Titirangi which is the gateway to the Waitakere Ranges, and take a taxi from there. It is still more than 16 kilometres from Titirangi.
The shortest distance to be covered to get to one of those famous beaches would to take the train to Waitakere Central and from there take a taxi to Bethell's Beach. This would be only 12 kilometres. And the beach is spectacular.
You have to imagine the trip as a steady up- and downhill drive, with many winding turns, as you have to cross the Waitakere Ranges.
The road to Karekare Beach follow the road to Piha and then turns off to the left.
Travel Tips for Auckland
K' Road
by fishandchips
Karangahapi road is a bizzare spot to watch some of the weirder sights that Auckland has to offer. At night is has all sorts of stuff on show from every sort of 'lady of the night' to an interesting mix of clubs and pubs. Of note is Joybong, a Thai restaurant & bar, Casera for coffee and QPR for kebabs.
Devonport - catch the ferry from downtown Auckland
by Charri
If you want to stroll, eat and have a ferry ride a trip to Devonport is a good way to idle away the day. Catch the Devonport ferry from the Ferry Terminal at the bottom of Queen Street. The ferry takes about 20 - 25mins and stroll 100 - 150m into Devonport. It is a quaint suburb with some old villas (wooden houses constructed at the end of the 19th and early 20th century). On a sunny day it is good to walk to the other side of the suburb to Cheltenham Beach where there is a great view of Rangitoto. Another more energetic stroll is to walk up Mt Victoria for a great view of Waitemata Harbour and Hauraki Gulf.
Crystal Mountain
by keeweechic
Crystal Mountain is set on 19 acres within the Waitakere Ranges. They have the largest selection of rare and exquisite minerals and crystals in New Zealand as well as meteorites. They have been collected from all around the world. Some pieces weigh an astonishing 1000kg and some stand at over 2 metres high.

Bus and Taxis
by Robdaz
There is red tourist bus that do a loop around the major sites in the CBD area of Auckland and this is free.
For travel within central Auckland , the Link provides a frequent bus service between the fDowntown, Parnell, Newmarket, Auckland Hospital, University, Karangahape Road, Ponsonby, Victoria Park, Sky City and Queen Street. The fare is $1.30. Call rideline on 366 6400 for Auckland bus info.
Bus services to the suburbs of Aucklands are generally poor and infrequent and has been the source of many complaints.
Taxi service like most major city are convenient but very expensive.
Fine dining or fine prices?
by worldkiwi about CinCin on Quay.
The best thing about CinCin on Quay (pronounced Chin chin), is the setting. This is one of Auckland's upper market restaurants. Personally, I thought it was a bit over rated. I went there for lunch with workmates and we had a very snooty waiter. When I asked for a steak knife I was made to feel like a philistine! They didn't have one and the fact I asked seemed to make the waiter incredulous! As for the steak, it was expensive, small and had some grissle in it! Nice view though. If you want a delicious steak, at a good price, go to Zavito Cafe and Bar in Mairangi Bay, on Auckland's North Shore - big meal, good price, and delicious.

Q: Currency exchange in Auckland "Where can I change NZ currency in New Zealand?
Banks or money changer?"
