Staying overnight on TiriTiri Matangi Island.
I was surprised to see that there is overnight accommodation on the island. The hostel (pictured) is up by the lighthouse. There are kitchen facilities and bunk beds in the rooms. The ranger will pick you and your bags up from the ferry and run you up the hill. Apparently at night, you will hear the sounds of the island rsident kiwi (the birds - not the people).

The Bunkhouse
Accomodation on the island is limited and basic.
In fact it is primarily intended for researchers and volunteers, but despite what travel agents and even tourist information offices in Auckland might tell you, tourists can stay here as well - as long as there are beds left. While advance bookings are necessary, I found that getting in was very easy, and in fact there were vacant beds available right through my 3 nights' stay.
The "Bunkhouse", as it is called, a basic, hostel-style building with shared rooms and a common kitchen which everyone must keep clean.
Chances are you will be the only tourist staying there, but will have more interesting scientists, volunteers and conservation workers for company anyway.
The cost was 20 NZD/night, which is similar to what you'd pay for an average hostel elsewhere in the country!
