Good roads.
Waiheke roads are generally quite good. Often a little skinny but not too many problems. there are one or two unsealed areas only left on the Island. Lots of Islanders walk and bike around, here you can see a walkway beside the road.

Rich in natural beauty Waiheke's coastline unfolds to reveal stunning white and golden sand beaches, rocky foreshores and estuaries rich in native bird life. Stands of lush sub tropical forest are bounded by farmland and vineyards. Waiheke Island is very hilly with few flat areas. The highest point is Maunganui at 231 metres.
The climate is generally warmer than Auckland with less humidity and rain and more sunshine hours. There is a permanent population of around 8,000 residents. The beautiful beaches and native forest reserves on Waiheke harmonise delightfully with the cafes, vineyards and art shops. This island is perfect for a day's exploring and wine tasting, or several days of indulgent relaxation. It's also a great place for hiking, biking and sea kayaking.
The Island measures 19.3 kilometres lengthwise from east to west and in width varies from 0.64 kilometres to 9.65 kilometres with an area of 92 square kilometres.
The coastline is 133.5 kilometres including 40 km of beaches, it is the second largest of the Hauraki Gulf islands, the most populated and most accessible with regular ferry and air services. The port of Matiatia at the western end of the island is 17.7 km from Auckland and the eastern end is 21.4 km from Coromandel.

Waiheke is a special mix of artists, environmentalists, capitalists and vintners, escapists, beneficiaries, and of course mainland holidaymakers. Most trying to get away from something, although at first glance, I cannot think what they are getting away from as it was surprisingly similar to many suburbs of Auckland.
But an island is an island, and this one is special! Situated 20 kms of the coast of Auckland in the “Hauraki Gulf”, it has 96 kms of coastline of it’s own. I was in awe at the number of little bays and beaches, inlets and harbours, truly it’s prize asset.
Approx 92sq/kms, Waiheke is 25kms long.
These small, often individualised, holiday houses are known as 'baches'. It's short for "Bachelor", refering to single man's quarters. Adapted to describing the small, humble holiday houses found all around the coasts of New Zealand. This one is particularly attractive, looking great with the date palm in behind.
Another common site occurring over recent years is the vineyards. Apparently the climate suits and more and more are appearing.
