Devonwood Manor is a motel from the Pacifica chain who, for some reason, seem to specialise in English Mock Tudor style motels! Our room was spotless, with a separate lounge/kitchen as well as the double bedroom, and best of all, a private enclosed courtyard with our own spa pool! Actually, you would be hard pressed to find a motel in Rotorua which didn't offer this. Although you could walk into town from here, to be fair it would be a long walk - better to drive or get a taxi. It was here that I discovered that 8.30am is not too early in the day to be sat in a spa pool with a glass of Merlot and a plate of blue cheese and crackers (oh, and id I mention the Rotorua Mud face mask...?)

 | | | | Victoria Lodge Motel: Great place, shame about the spa... | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
We booked two adjoining rooms at the Victoria Lodge for a 2 night visit with my parents from England. We paid $105 NZ dollars per room per night, which for peak season is pretty good (we booked over a holiday weekend in January). I have mixed feelings about this motel - it has some excellent qualities, but one or two drawbacks as well. Firstly, I must say that the owners seem like great people. We were forced to delay our visit at the last minute, due to a family illness. They were very understanding and didn't charge a cancellation fee. Bearing in mind we had two rooms to cancel I thought that was very good of them. At the time, we weren't in a position to rebook. When we did get to make our visit to Rotorua, we found the rooms compact (OK, small) but very adequate for our short stay, beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. There is parking right outside, but space is at a premium. There are bigger rooms ("executive double storey self contained appartments") but I didn't see those. BUT....one of the things you tend to expect from Rotorua motels (and something we had asked about) was a private spa. We did get one, but I would use the term 'private spa' here in its loosest possible sense. For myself, climbing through a bathroom window into a walled, crazy-paved area approximately 7' x 5' that you fill with thermal water is pushing it a bit far. I found it dangerous climbing back in (wet and slippery, to say nothing of the fact that at 5'1" I struggled with the height of the window I had to climb through) and if you have the slightest mobility problem, you wouldn't even attempt it. I've stayed at Kiwi-paka twice now. The first time was way back in the late 1990's. Then, I stayed in the chalets. It was very nice, with two floors, bathroom and I think it had a little kitchen. In 2004, I stayed in the dorms. There were only 4 beds in the dorm room (the 'Lodge') and they were not bunks. That is much better than some other NZ hostels I've stayed in! The room was nice and warm and the bathrooms were clean with heated floors! That's important in winter! There is a large common area, with kitchen facilities and a TV room. The hostel has an outdoor thermal swimming pool. There is a lively bar and cafe. YHA members can get a dorm for $NZ20. | | | | Rydges Hotel Rotorua: I could sleep in the swimming pool Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
the hotel itself was adequate, clean, ok place to stay... but oh the pool. an amazing pool. if it weren't for that I'd likely look for someplace nicer, overall. not that it wasn't OK, it was, but the pool was a huge bonus.
the pool was on the top floor, inside, but the windows were open... there were two built in large spas which were attached to the pool but separated by a stone wall... the ledge was barely an inch below water surface, so if you were in the HOT side you could dangle your arms into the pool (cooler but by no means cold) or if you were in the cooler side you could dangle your arms into the HOT side... or even rest your chin on the ledge and let the water lap back and forth. utter bliss. and even better at 630 AM, no one is awake yet, you have it ALL to yourself so, like a seal, I climbed onto the ledge separating the HOT from the cooler... and fell asleep... the warm water lapping gently around me. | | | | Affordable Willowhaven Holiday Park: Ngongataha | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
This holiday park offers campsites, caravan sites, Hookups for Mobile Homes, and chalets as well. Our chalet was very comfortable, and well equiped with cooking facilities, a tv/kitchen area, bedroom and bathroom. Plenty of room to park vehicles beside the chalet. This is a very affordable place, not too far from Rotorua, at Ngongataha, just a short drive. Well worth considering as an alternative to more cramped and expensive places in town.
Great open spaces, not at all cramped. Nice playground for kids, and very nice barbeque area and other facilities. Warning though - you can get a bit annoyed with the abundance of sandflies, down near the water.
