Packing List
by b1bob
You don't really need to carry every stitch of clothing you ever owned for an average-sized trip here. If you go in the winter like I did, pack warm threads. I don't see anything different you would need to stow in your toiletry bag here than to any other country or, for that matter, a short business trip within the States. A 35mm camera with as much film as you think you need will probably suit most folks' purposes.
Great Smelling Muffins!
by ATXtraveler about Te Wairoa Cafe
If you are headed out in the morning to see the Buried Village, make sure you do not eat breakfast first... primarilly so you can tell me if the scones and muffins at the cafe are half as good as they smelled!
We had just completed breakfast at our B+B, and did not get a chance to eat one, although next time I will surely eat there!
We did have a juice and a drink, but they were not priced badly for the captive audience that we were.
Hells Gate
by david1982
Hells Gate is one of the many geothermal areas around Rotorua and Taupo. I went on a quiet morning where it was basically me and a few others walking around looking at the geothermal marvels inside.
Mud volcanos, Devil's cauldron, Cooking Pool etc are all quite cool. Boiling mud!
Prepare to get hot, it may be winter but all that hot steam makes it a hot morning out!
Good value for money. Other alternatives are Whakerawerewa (or something) or Wai-O-Tapo on the way to Taupo
ROTORUA MUSEUM OF ART & HISTORY
by kiwigal_1
The museum is a beautiful old building located within the government gardens. The Polynesian Spa is located very close by. The museum building itself is the old bathhouse and is a fantastic photo opportunity in itself. Inside the museum offers plenty of information on the history of Rotorua and the volcanic region it is built on.
Free Entry to Maori Village and War Memorial
by kiwi
The historic marae at Ohinemutu also provides an opportunity to visit the Maori War Memorial on the lake's edge. This is an interesting and sacred site, remembering the many Maori servicemen who served in our military forces. The site alone, on the edge of the lake and with the arches and setout, makes this place very spiritual and moving.
You can visit this memorial in conjunction with seeing the Maori Village. This is one more chance to visit some culture and history at no cost.
