Holiday Park for large Family Reunion

by candjamadio

Hi can anyone recommend a holiday park for a family reunion/70th birthday, 40-50 people. Self catering. Also needs to have a small hall or any kind of room with kitchen where we can all meet and share our time together. Early August.
Thanks Jenny

The Blue Lake Top 10 Holiday Park has all kinds of self-contained units and motels - but it is a 10 min drive from the centre.

Another lakeside park would be Cedar Wood (6 km from town centre). They even have conference facilities ;-)

Apart from all these holiday parks which have motel units, cabins and tourist flats with cooking facilities, there is an endless choice of motels and motor lodges with cooking facilities - but probably not with a lounge where you could accommodate 40 to 40 people. As August is a chilly month even in Rotorua, you really need an indoor facility.

Travel Tips for Rotorua

Bubbling Mud Pools

by ATXtraveler

One of the items I was most interested in seeing when I went to Rotorua was the bubbling mud pools. Because of all the thermal activity under the earth in Rotorua, some natural steam is naturally released, and if that steam is held back by natural mud, the result is a bubbling mess of mud and energy!

If you are a photographer looking for a challenge, give it a try and see if you can get a bubble just before it bursts! I dare you!

I personally was a little disappointed when I went, because of the moisture and rain, the bubbles were not nearly as pronounced as I would like.

Rotorua Art & History Museum

by sunnywong

The Rotorua Art & History Museum (Te Whare Taonga O Te Arawa) has some nice exhibits and contains artifacts that display the cultural heritage of the Arawa tribe, who were the main pre-European inhabitants of Rotorua.
If you don't interest to visit the exhibits, the charming museum building and its garden is also worth to take pictures.

Paradise Valley

by irish147

Paradise Valley, we went along the Thermal Explorer Highway from Auckland. Had a good look around Paradise Valley, saw the big pig and the trout and the lions. Had some lunch and then patted the lion cubs, both female and only 8 weeks old. Had another look around while waiting for the lion feeding. 5 lionesses and 2 lions. The man roped off an area outside the fence and then explained how lions feed. Then he threw chunks of meat over the fence to the lions. An advantage of hand raising the lions is that they know their names so he calls the name of the lion that is going to be fed before throwing the meat over, but sometimes the lions miss and one of the others grab it.

Rainbow Springs & Farm

by tuff

Rainbow Springs & farm features agriculture experience of New Zealand. It has varieties of farm animals and fish exhibits, and it also offers shows on sheep handling and shearing. Of course, there is the kiwi display which is unique in New Zealand.

SKYLINE GONDOLA & LUGE

by kiwigal_1

Another fun activity (great for families!) to do in Rotorua is the Gondola and Luge. There are three tracks in total to take down the side of Mt Ngongotaha.

It costs $7 for one ride but I recommend getting the $35 pass ($25 for children) which includes a gondola ride and 5 luge rides.

If you aren't adventurous enough to want to luge then you can just take the gondola ride which offers fantastic views across Rotorua. The cost is $18 for adults and $8 for children.

There is a restaurant up the top that has buffet lunches and dinners available.
