How to get around
by 54cookie
My husband is going to be at the Mungunui Hunting Lodge in March and since I don't hunt, I wanted to find out what I could do by myself in Rotorua. Can you do some things that are within walking distance? Just trying to get some information before I make my decision to come. Thanks so much.

There is quite a bit to do around Rotorua, the one's that come to mind are visiting a spa, seeing the Lady Knox Geyser and visiting a traditional Maori village. Most of the activities have transport from your accommodation included in the price. Contact the lodge and ask them for additional info and also look at the Rotorua travel guide in vt - click on the tab to the top of the screen, or look down the right hand side of it.
Have a good trip.

I would also add going to see a traditional hangi, visiting the Agrodome and visiting the waitapu which is a geothermal park which encompasses the Lady Knox Geyser as well.
For Taupo, I would suggest taking an airplane to see Lake Taupo or White Island or go for a nature walk in Tongariro National Park.

Thanks for the responses. I appreciate it. Looks like we may be bringing friends with us, so that will be nice. So, any suggestions on the best spa to go to there? And I am planning on the other sites too. Can't wait.
Travel Tips for Rotorua
Taakawa Beer - Official Beer of the Maoris
by ATXtraveler
"Indigienous Ale of Aotearoa" is what the Taakawa label markets itself as... but I would tell you to not waste your time on this one!
If you are beer connesieur, then this one will leave you high and dry... as there was no distinguishable taste to it in my opinion.
Skip it, and stick with a Monteiths or something!
Skyline Skyrides
by keeweechic
Skyline Skyrides take you up 487m above sea level to a fun on Mt Ngongotaha which overlooks Rotorua, Lake Rotorua and the surrounding areas. There is a restaurant and bar at the top which of course has a spectacular view, and informal eating area and The Luge. This is a world first, 1km gravity ride on a 3 wheeled luge cart which of course has a breaking and steering system to control you speed. There is a chairlift back to the top. Located 3 kms from Rotorua's town centre.

Agrodome - the best sheep show!
by tomatohead
At first, I was kind of nervous being in that big room, full of the busloads of tourists who'd never seen farm animals before. I was also a bit nervous about the enthusiasm of the presenters.
But wait! The enthusiasm is catchy! The champion ram studs are entertaining! The information is useful (you might have most all your sheep questions answered in the show!)
It was one of the highlights of my 2004 trip to NZ. I'd been to "dog and pony" shows before, and I thought I'd seen it all before.
In the end, I found the enthusiasm, the information, and the folks/animals endearing.
The wee cafe in the car park isn't half bad, either!
Whaka is like notihing you've seen before
by MLW20
Te Whakarewarewa is the best known thermal reserve and cultural "park". It's also known as Whaka (much easier to pronounce too)
The main attraction is the Pohutu Geyser. It erupts 10-20 times per day but there is no timetable for when it will go off. It is really a site to see. The geyser shoots hot water in the air about 20m. When you sit on the rocks near the geyser they tend to be warm to hot. They said that sitting on these rocks is good for ya and therepeutic!
You should also look for the bubbling mud area. It looks like small volcanoes shooting out mud.
The NZ Maoria Arts and Crafts Institute is located at Whaka. You can see Maoris carving tikis and masks. There is also an art gallery, a replica Maori village, free guided tours and a pretty good gift shop.

You must visit the Jade factory and purchase atleast one piece of Jade. They mainly sell Neclaces with different shapes that mean different things.
