Colonial: Homestay with a view

by iandsmith

Jenny and Bob have set up a slightly upmarket B&B overlooking the seaside of Tairua. It's one of those places you just don't want to leave.
The street ultimately is a dead end so there's not a lot of traffic going past at any time which adds to the allure of the place.
Apart from a spacious bedroom, there's a roomy en suite and then a cosy little lounge with the usual T.V., books and assorted games if the weather is against you.
Everything is spotlessly clean and you'll be well catered for.
It cost us aroung $190NZ per night including breakfast (for two).
If indulgence is something you're looking for, you could do a lot worse.

Crashing into a comfy bed and waking up to sublime views is something I can learn to live with. Not since I'd been to Taormina (Sicily) had I had such an experience, though it was the epitome of such places.
There's a five minute walk (fairly steep) up to the summit of Paku Hill with views to die for at the top. This is a genuine 360 degrees panorama.
The sumptuous breakfasts and carefree atmosphere left us both wanting more but, sadly, we only had the two nights.

Tairua Shores Motel, Tairua (Coromandel Peninsula): A Great View to Paku Hill

by Kakapo2

Update July 2008

The Amaroo Motel has got a new name and is now the Tairua Shores Motel. It was refurbished and modernised. Rates are $ 95 to 175.

Since our first visit in 1991 the Amaroo Motel - now the Tairua Shores Motel - has had three different owners (I hope I did not forget anyone... ;-) and now even some more LOL But my affection for this place has not changed, and the owners, whoever they were, have always been friendly.

In the meantime there are a lot more options for staying in Tairua on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, but I just like it, and that is why I always go back - also now after the refurbishment.

The motel has just six groundfloor units with separate bedrooms and kitchen facilities. There is also an outdoor sitting area from where you have wonderful views to Paku Hill, the harbour, the adjacent Tairua river and Pauanui on the other side of the river. Next to the motel you can get on a boat for cruising the canals of Pauanui.

Although located on the main road the units are located off the road, so you have no road noise. The restaurants and shops are a some minutes walk away. And it is only a 25 to 30 minutes drive to Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove further north. Tairua is really ideally located for exploring the peninsula.

And when you are there, do not miss to drive up Paku Hill and climb the last metres to the summit. The 360 degree panoramic view is one of the most spectacular in New Zealand.

Marlin Apartments: With a 'private' beach

by vtveen

When we stayed in Whitianga a couple of years ago this complex was named 'Marlin Motor Lodge'. But the main reason to stay here is still the same: the excellent location, only separated by a road from a superb beach.

Enjoy the (afternoon) sun and stunning views from the terrace in front of the beach apartments. Be sure to get one of the two beachfront apartments.

The Admirals Arms, Coromandel: Refurbished historic hotel

by allikat

Built in 1872, the Admirals Arms has been refurbished in recent years, winning awards for the work done ( the hotel was a national finalist in the 2002/3 Best Country Hotel and Best Redevelopment Bar and Restaurant) . A typical colonial style building, the hotel has a wonderful long balcony running the length of the first floor where you can sit and enjoy the view over the harbour.
There is a welcoming bar area, a nice garden bar and a restaurant, all of which cater for non residents of the hotel as well.
Rooms at the Admirals Arms start from around $65NZ

The great thing about the Admirals Arms is the care they have taken to bring it back to its former glory.

Anchor Lodge, Coromandel Township: Coromandels newest motel

by allikat

Situated just a short walk from the main street, towards the wharf, Anchor Lodge is a small motel, overlooking the water with a backdrop of trees and bush. There are 15 self contained log cabins with balconies which, depending on the unit, will sleep up to 5 people. There is also a barbeque area and a small heated pool and spa.

The cabins are very spacious, with high ceilings, and are absolutely spotless. The motel was built in 2002, and seems to have become very popular - I have hoped to stay here a number of times, but needed to book ahead to do so - it always seems to be full!

Anchor Lodge first came to my attention a year or so ago. A day spent fishing off the rocks at Coromandels Kennedy Bay had left me with soaked jeans - crossing the creek one way was fine - coming back the tide had come in but my legs hadn't grown any!! We called in at the motel to see if they had a room (regrettably they didn't) but the lady was so kind and took my wet clothes off to dry them. By this time I was wearing my partners jeans (and he is much taller than me!!) and she even offered to dig out a pair of her own and lend them to me till mine were dry!

Now we have stayed there, and found it to be just as friendly a place as we first thought, with a couple of ducks waiting patiently by the office door for a few bits of bread, and Ben the big black cat sitting in the middle of the parking area forcing the cars to drive around him!
