This is the Pinnacles Hut and it is administered by DOC - Department of Conservation. Provided for walkers and to avail them to some shelter, while visiting our forest parks.
All bookings and info about the hut is done throught the Kaueranga Visitor Centre, on the road in. There is no communication with the hut itself, which has only solar power and gas for cooking.

This allows members of the general public to get into the bush and experience some of the outdoors. In particular here on the Coromandel, they will view some of the most spectacular scenery in NZ.

This was my first experience of staying in a Department of Conservation (DOC) hut. The Pinnacles hut is one of New Zealand's largest such huts, providing basic bunkhouse accommodation for eighty people in two large communal bunk rooms. There is no mains power or water supply, but solar panels mean the main areas do have lighting.
There is a large kitchen/dining room with basic cooking facilities - bottled gas stoves and cold water sinks. There is a coal burner and a drying room, cold showers, and three long drop toilets (none too fragrant either I'm afraid!). There is a barbecue and two large outdoor decks (one covered) with several picnic benches.
A bargain at $15 NZD per adult, or $7.50 NZD per child.
The views at the hut are just outstanding. From the large covered deck you can see the steep path winding up to the Pinnacles summit, and whichever direction you look in there is nothing but rugged hills covered with native bush. A real world on it's own and well worth the walk. Leave a Comment
