Remember when you stand on the beach and look out to the distance, that the next stop is right across the Pacific to Chile!! There are a few Pacific Islands but further north than here. So, as the crow flies, there is no land until Chile. For some reason I always think of that when I look out.

"View from the Lookout"

The views from the Harbour Lookout on Te Karaka Point are really stunning. It's worth the effort to get over there and take a look. It's a 20 min or so drive thru the forestry but there is a picnic area at the carpark, and a couple of walking tracks. To get to the viewing point you only need to walk for about 10 mins from the carpark.

"Forestry Road out the Peninsula"

To get to the lookout on Te Karaka Point head North out of Whangamata on Hwy 25 and turn right at the signpost to Onemana. Drive up to the crest of the rise, and before you get to Onemana directly there on the right is the entrance to the forestry area and the peninsula.
Sometimes this forestry gate is locked, but if open you can drive out to Te Karaka Point to look out over Whangamata. The views, when you get out there are wonderful and well worth the effort.

"The Forestry Road"

Most vehicles can get along the Forestry Road in dry weather, although a sportscar or other lowslung car wouldn't like the rocks.
It does get muddy in the winter, but we chose a nice day. Summertime the road is often closed because of the risk of forest fire.
