After a long day’s drive we finally arrived in Gisborne. The drive to this secluded spot is long however the roads a very good and it is a pleasure to have the road to yourself for the majority of the journey.
We never pre-book accommodation and driving into the city we started to wish we had, with not a lot of accommodations open for business.
We pulled into Teal Motor Lodge that still appeared to be open and we were so glad that we did! (Apparently we got their last room)
We were warmly greeted by the friendly host and we were surprised at the genuine hospitality. We were given a local newspaper, local map, fresh milk and escorted to our room! (this does not often happen). The rooms are large & airy, are spotlessly clean and the décor is wonderful. Our unit had a spabath that was very much appreciated. The kitchen had a full sized stove and was better equipped than most.
Unique Quality: In the morning we had a chance to wonder around the complex and discovered that this property is full of wonderful quirks. The laundry has a set of airline seats and magazines to read while you wait for your laundry. It has a vending machine that vends alcohol along with other drinks and snacks! The salt-water swimming pool is fabulous and there is a BBQ area that would have been great for a relaxing evening unwind.
The grounds are huge and the gardens and mature trees have been nurtured to provide a beautiful natural setting that makes a pleasant relief from the norm of cobblestone courtyards.
We were genuinely sad to leave so soon as we had to be in Napier for a family gathering. This motel is rated four stars and in our opinion this has been under rated! Would recommend that you book ahead.
Directions: GladstoneRoad is Gisborne's main drag. The property is very close to the central business district
