And Raetihi
My cousin has a holiday house in Ohakune and has offered to lend it to me. Which would be great because we did a school trip up here when I was just a kid and fell in love with this area.
These days how does one get from Wellington to Ohakune. And from Ohakune to Raetihi?
Cousin says house is a railway cottage so one presumes it is close to the railway line. But does the train still stop there?
Web sites with travel info for NZ would be great. Want to do trips to lots of other places.

the Overlander (Wellington - Auckland) stops in Ohakune. You can check timetables and fares on
www.railnewzealand.co.nz
Depending on when you want to travel you have to consider that there is a daily service only until 5 May and after that only on Fri, Sat and Sun.
Do not know about bus service between Ohakune and Raetihi but found this link:

on the internet which says that there is a service every Tuesday LOL As it is only 10 km or so, you could probably take a taxi.
As the Ruapehu Visitor Centre in Ohakune is open 7 days a week perhaps you should contact them and they can tell you more:

mate, you are a brick!
rail service seems to have got a bit bad these days - maybe buses have taken over - i did find a site called nakedbuses which seems to go to a lot of places - and it is much cheaper than the train
i suppose i can't expect there to be a bus between ohakune and raetihi every couple of hours like there used to be 45 years ago - even then there were only 3 people on the bus

Yes, trains in NZ are mainly for tourists nowadays. Scenic and expensive LOL
Nakedbus is great. If you are lucky you can travel for one dollar from Christchurch to Dunedin, and if you are really lucky even from Wellington to Ohakune. I made some tests on this websites and really would have got several one dollar fares.

my husband is from nz too and when he gets home from the dentist i am going to tell him how shocking trains have got - not even one train a day soon
I used to often travel overnight - and it was cheap and cheerful
i was checking out the naked bus site (bookmarked it) - it has some amazing fares - and seems very user friendly - not ohakune but other places i want to go to - like Shannon and Tirau and Waipukurau

I'm pretty sure the track between Ohakune and Raetihi has been taken away now, quite a few years back.

There was a series on TV here a while back covering New Zealands railways. I thought it was such a shame that the presenter, Marcus Lush, had to cover most of it via means other than a train. Lots of cycling and walking.

i love trains and they seem to have more or less vanished
89 bucks by train from wgton to ohakune! i don't think so!
and soon only one train a day 3 days a week

... and the crazy thing is that some railway lines exist but are not used for passenger trains.
From Christchurch to Greymouth you have the expensive TranzAlpine and the coal trains from the West Coast to Lyttelton - but no "normal" traffic. They could even use the line for suburban trains from Chch to Lyttelton.
In Dunedin I have just seen that they have a tourist train ride to Palmerston once a week or so. Goods are transported from Christchurch to Invercargill by train but no people! (Marcus Lush also travelled on such freight trains.)
I am not sure but there should also be the line Wellington - Napier.
It is more than strange that in a country which calls itself green and clean moves the whole traffic onto the roads, and some people even think they need more than one car per person - my people neighbour household has three LOL
But reducing the number of passenger trains is not all. They once had a perfect tramway system in Christchurch and demolished it - just to reintroduce the romantic tramway city loop to rip off tourists. It does not serve the locals as the loop firstly is really short (you can walk the distance) and secondly so expensive that it is far cheaper to use the car. And right now on the TV news they reported that Auckland's show-off mayor replaced the mayoral hybrid car by a gas-guzzling Holden that equals his big ego.
