If you have the chance to visit a Maori marae (pronounced ma-rye and is a meeting place), protocol expects you to remove your shoes before entering the house. This is so that you pay respect to the tipuna (the deceased ancestors) and that you dont carry bad omens in.
Please note: this is expected in most if not all maraes.
