2 days to Bay of Islands
by Colleen52
We will be in Auckland for a couple of days before our cruise. Would we be better to take a commercial tour to the Bay of Islands or to hire a car and drive ourselves?

I always like to drive around. My opinion, 2 days may be a rush to Bay of Islands from Auckland? and back. I find NZ roads narrow, winding though traffic is low. The views are awesome.

I would recommend staying around Auckland (just for a couple of days).
You could easily spend one day in the city and another in the surrounding areas:
Waitakere Ranges with the beaches of Karekare and Piha or the gannet colony of Muriwai, or take a ferry to Devonport, Rangitoto or Waiheke Island.
If you just have 2 days and still want to visit the bay of Islands I would take a tour instread of driving yourself.

I prefer to self drive - I think it gives you more flexibility. But if you are on a time-budget then some of the coach tours to the area do a great job of making sure you see at least the highlights.

Hi When are you going, we were there last week during the floods, road slides and closures and had to retreat to Auckland, then saw on TV the problems caused by rough seas to the cruise ship and passengers. If weather is good it is an easy drive along Highway 1, aprox 3.5 hours drive. Check out cost of tour and thenevaluate, with a tour you are certain to see the main attractions.
Good Luck,
Mike
Travel Tips for Bay of Islands
Choices

Chances are that sometime during you Bay of Islands excursion you'll want to visit Russell. To get there you have three options: 1. Drive; 2. Catch a car ferry and drive; 3. Catch a ferry direct.
Now, the first option involves a fairly circuitous route and a lot of time to get there. En route there'll be some nice scenery but it's the least preferred option amongst locals and tourists.
The second option is popular with locals but when you bear in mind that it's $10 per car and you've still got petrol to pay for, it can be costly.
The third option is the cheapest, unless you have a family of half a dozen or more, and it's a pleasant trip from Paihia if the weather is in your favour. This is the option favoured by tourists.
Cliffedge

After a quick shower, Marj n I decided to take a walk along the coastal path not far from the lodge. Along the narrow path, we met lots of friendly people and of course this doggie Fred, whom we continuously met each time we went out of the lodge.
Going around KeriKeri -
by Audrey118
About 20 mins drive from our lodge is KeriKeri. KeriKeri in Maori means keep on digging. Kerikeri is noted for its arts and crafts, so we decided to check it out.
Our first stop was this wooden craft shop...huge stuff!!! Most of the stuff are made of local wood - n there was plenty to choose. KAURI WORK SHOP
Largest selection of Kauri products in Northland. Small Gifts, Bowls, Tables and Mirrors.

Kawakawa - remarkable toilets
by vtveen
The worlds most remarkable public toilets can be found in Kawakawa.
A little town situated about 15 km's from Paihia.
They are designed by Friedrich Hundertwasser, an Austrian artist who lived in Kawakawa, in 1999 and nowadays a 'must see' for Hundertwasser fans (more information about Hundertwasser: www.kunsthauswien.com).
Puketi Forest
by didgeridorien
This forest is a couple of hours away from the Bay of Islands. It's got kauri trees in it, trees that get very big. There are a few walks going thru this forest, it's really worth it. Don't forget to hug a tree!
