Peppertree Lodge
This place is noisey, though the staff are genuinly nice...which is a rarity in hostels in the western world.
They close and lock the common area at 11:30pm, this includes kitchen, TV room and internet. The reception closes at 7:30pm and opens at 7am, so if you arrive inbetween that time, you are SOL.
On the other hand, they lend out bikes and kayaks for free, with a 20NZD deposit.
Bed in 8 bed dorm is 20NZD with and 23NZD without a BBH card.

Basecamp 2006!
On my 2006 trip to Bay of islands I stayed in the Peppertree Lodge. The staff here are really great. Upon arrival Ken checked us in and booked us on our dolphin cruise for the next day, getting my two companions, who didn't have any hostel affiliation, a discount the same as mine. That was great. We had a triple room that could have slept four. The room had a small ensuite. The facilities are very clean and there is an upstairs lounge and three computers to access the internet on. The beach and bars of King Street are virtually outside the door.
I must be getting old, because my only gripe would be the pumping base from the bars at midnight!
NZ$30 pp per night (2006).

Best Hostel in Paihia
The Peppertree lodge turned out to be the right place to settle in for the week. It had a vast video collection available free for the guests. The kitchen was well equipped as well so I could cook and invent all sorts of concoctions.
