You are probably better to stay at Paihia or Kerikeri, and just take the ferry across to Russell if you want to visit.

3 hours 30 is a little optimistic...getting out of Auckland can be a lengthy exercise in heavy traffic, and I think this timing must assume taking the ferry from Opua to Russell...driving to Russell round the coast will certainly take longer.
Have a look at http://www.aatravel.co.nz/main/td-calculator.php and www.aa.co.nz as well as Jaap's links, and http://www.tourism.net.nz/region/northland/northland---far-north/tours/

Not only the driving time from AKL to Russell is optimistic, also from Russell to Cape Reinga.

I would rather say it takes you 3 hours and more from Paihia to Cape Reinga. The ferry trip from Russell to Opua and the drive to Paihia adds another 30 minutes.

Russell surely is the nicer (and more expensive) place to stay compared to Paihia. To drive to Russell and not take the ferry is only an option if you have a lot of time and leisure, or it is endless, and in particular cannot be recommended in the dark.

If you stay close to the passenger ferry terminal in Russell and your only plan for the next day is the drive to Cape Reinga you could leave the car in Paihia and take the passenger ferry.

Please note: Passenger and car ferries are at completely different locations on both sides, several kilometres apart, and not at walking distance at all.

Note taken.

Time factor is important as we have only 7 nights. If we hire car from the airport and drive to the ferry terminal. How much is the cost 2 Russel and is the Ferry Terminal close from the airport. Can you also tell me of other important factors.

Thanks

The vehicle ferry to Russell is in Opua - and 243 kilometres from Auckland Airport. (Driving time would be 3.5 hours in absolutely perfect conditions.)

Or do you mean: the airport in Kerikeri? (31 km; this is the next airport to Russell/Paihia)

The car ferry from Opua to Okiato (on the Russell side) costs NZ$ 10 for car and driver one way, plus NZ$ 1 for every additional passenger.

You do not save any money if you take the passenger ferry from Paihia to Russell because it costs NZ$ 6 per adult, meaning: if you are two you pay NZ$ 12 one way, and the car plus two people on the other ferry costs NZ$ 11. You just save some time.

Beach & sea views

Russell's little waterfront area is quite small, quaint and natural. I enjoyed my waterfront walk here much more than Paihia, where in comparison, there's too much going on.
Russell is quite leisurely.

Quaint little Russell

by Kate-Me

The small seaside town of Russell is also somewhat known by its original Maori name, Kororareka (meaning "sweet penguin" after a Maori legend which relates to the site)

Captain Cook sailed into the Bay of Islands in 1769.

The town was named Russell in 1844.

To reach Russell, you travel across the bay by 10 minute foot passenger or car ferry from Paihia. There is a way by road, but a much longer route.

The main street I enjoyed most was The Strand, which is a narrow laneway leading along the waterfront.

Russell's population is about 1000 people.

More info: www.russell.gen.nz

Russell Police Station, also on The Strand, just steps from the waterfront, with great views of the bay.

"History, nature, and sunshine!"

Russell (once known as Kororareka), was New Zealand's first capital and major European town. It wasn't the sleepy, picturesque town it is now, being a place of revelry for whalers and sailors onshore for short times in the 19th Century.
Today, stroll along the waterfront past verandahs attached to buildings reminicent of another age. There is a lot of history here to explore and you can enjoy it all on foot... there's not much traffic in Russell!
On this page there is a picture of Russell taken from across the harbour at Paihia.

"RUSSELL"

Russell’s seaside setting and ‘Old World’ charm makes it a pleasure to stroll along the esplanade. Quaint colonial buildings line the beachfront and pohutukawa trees provide welcome shade as you gaze at the yachts gently rocking on their moorings.

The town promotes itself as peaceful and ‘romantic’ in contrast to the commercial bustle of Paihia across the bay. That this quiet village atmosphere remains is quite remarkable given Russell’s turbulent history and its unique heritage as the country‘s oldest European settlement.

Originally a fortified Maori village known as Kororareka, meaning ‘how sweet is the penguin’, it became a haven for ship deserters and ruffians in the early whaling days, earning the title of ‘Hellhole of the Pacific.’
