"Mt Taranaki"
Mt Taranaki (or Mt Egmont as it is also known) is the volcanoe we all associate with the area around New Plymouth. It stands tall above the surrounding landscape.
If the weather is good it is a challenging climb for those that are fit and well prepared. If that doesn't sound like you there are beautiful walks through verdant forest to waterfalls, wetlands and lots of excellent viewpoints.
Taranaki is linked by legend to the mountains of the central North Island. It is said that Taranaki carved out the bed of the Whanganui River on a tragic flight from its ancestral home to the east. Today Taranaki is still venerated and its summit is sacred to the tangata whenua of the area.
