The luxurious Grand Chateau

Unique Quality: The Grand Chateau sits on the outskirts of Whakapapa village with a backdrop of volcanos. It was originally built in 1929 and has since been extended.
We didn't stay here, but we did enjoy a post walk celebratory drink (OK, I had a cuppa!) after we had finished the crossing, and went on to have dinner at their casual apres ski restaurant.
The Chateau is very grand and plush inside, with lots of sumptuous furnishings, a grand piano playing in the lounge, crystal chandeliers and what looked like a pretty and formal restaurant (which we definitely weren't dressed for). Despite the fact that we weren't resident guests, we were made to feel very welcome by the staff, and we sat on comfy sofas by an enormous picture window through which we watched Ngauruhoe disappear in the early evening cloud. Very nice!
A room here would be expensive, but it would be lovely for a special occasion or a bit of a treat.
