Turangi
Turangi , called itself The Trout Fishing Capital of the World and it is the close to the Tongariro region. The town is really small and their is nothing much happening there but it is a great base for day trips to the Tongariro National Park, Kaimanawa Forest Park, Pureroa Forest Park as well as being only a 40 minute drive to the Whakapapa ski area on Mt Ruapehu. We stayed a week there on a time-share with Interval International.
Turangi is about 4 hours drive from either Auckland or Wellington and only 40 minutes from Taupo, so it lies right in the centre of North Island.
Being close to the Tongariro Region and being on the banks of the Tongariro River , their are lots of great outdoor activities to keep yourself busy . You can go fishing, mountain biking, hiking or leisurely bush walks, white water rafting, kayaking, sight seeing and much more.
While we were there I tried fly fishing ( my first time) and went hiking at Mt Rupehu. We also made many trips to Taupo. I will tried to load some pics as soon as l locate them.
