Hi, just picked up a great "grab a seat" fare to Hamilton next year. Only going to be there for 4 days, just a quick little escape from Sydney!
Can anyone recommend the best things to do around the city? Enough to occupy us for a few days. Can it be done without a car?
Also, we're on a late arriving flight (about midnight), so whats the best way from the airport to the city? How much will a taxi cost?

You would be best to rent a car, maybe drive out to Raglan Beach. Waitomo Caves is driving distance. There are shuttles to the city normally. Also there is a motel right there at the airport. Tell us what you like. There's a nice museum in the city. Keep in touch and will tell you more .
Hamilton is the fastest growing city at the moment in New Zealand. There's so much to do. www.hamilton.co.nz has a full list.
Here's some important ones:
1. Hamilton Gardens - over 30 themed gardens, amazing place.
2. Go Carts - In Te Rapa
3. River Cruise - The Waipa Delta boat has now changed to something else, is still an excellent ride.
4. Cafes and Bars - Hamilton has more cafes than any other city in Hamilton. The night scene is also the best in the country.

On State Highway One on the road near Hamilton is the town of Tirau. This town is often a stopping point for people driving between Auckland and Taupo or Rotorua. The town has a lot of souvenir shops, antique shops and cafes.
Look out for the corrugated iron "sheep" and "dog" on the main street. That is where the main tourist information centre is and public toilets.
