Great Place to Stay, Matamata - Hobiton

Our group had an extended stay at Maple Lodge, and found the hosts very accommodating, finding us a great local caterer to keep us feed. Set up their basment room for us to use for meetings and planning our strategies for our next game. Arranged and did all our washing overnight so it was ready for the next day. Helped source our local requiments, and with their very good very knowledge of the greater area they saved us a huge amount of time allowing us to get on with what we were there for and win our events.

This was one of the best overall experiences we have had, and if our travels take us back to Matamata we would not hesitate to return to Maple Lodge.

Travel Tips for Matamata

Drive around some of the lovely streets.

by kiwi

Matamata prides itself on it's trees. The streets are clean, tidy and well kept. This is a row of flowering cherry trees in full bloom. There is always a pretty pink blanket over the road when the flowers begin to fall. I love the spring, around October/November when the cherry trees in the streets are out in bloom. Very very pretty!

Still small town values

by kiwi

Matamata is still a small town with classic smalltown values. Neighbours help neighbours, and many people know and watch out for each other. It's well serviced with a small hospital and most other amenities. One doesn't have to travel far, to dentist, bank, doctor etc. They even have dances at the church hall which are open to the public. Enlarge the photo and view the noticeboard on the entrance to town.

Hobbiton Central Tour Meeting Spot

by ATXtraveler

One of the major reasons you would be going to Matamata these days would be to visit the set of Hobbiton from the movies "Lord of the Rings". The place you want to start your trip is at the town information center, which has been turned into a shrine for all things Hobbit.

The information center is covered in a hobbit like building, and is very colorful in comparison to the other regions!

It is located at 45 Broadway in Matamata.

Soak at Opal Hot Springs

by kiwi

There are three outdoor public mineral pools, temperatures ranging from 27deg C - 40deg C.
Also a private bushclad mineral outdoor pool and private indoor spa baths which can be hired.
Swimming lengths all year round, or simply soaking in the hotter mineral pools for healthy bodies.
Entry Fee - $NZ6
There is a resident swimming club.
For $NZ1 you can hire a security locker if you have valuables with you.
Adjacent to the springs, is a holiday park incorporating Cabins, Tourist cabins, flats and motels.
See more photos in my travelogue here Swim suit and towel.
If you fancy, you can take your meat and salad and have a barbeque, as there are bbq's to use there.

Tandem Skydiving

by kiwi

DROPZONE NZ LTD
Tandem Skydive while visiting Matamata, from $220. Photo and Video options available at added cost.

Freefall with a tandem master at over 200km/hr after a brief training session on the ground. Fly up to altitude, around 9000ft, and skydive out the aircraft over the lovely green fields of the Waikato.
Very exhilirating experience, not to be missed. Comfortable clothes, and shoes, all other equipment supplied.
