 | | | | Richmond Guest House: Ok for a couple of nights | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Basic B&B. Slightly run-down, but clean. No heating (I was there in winter). Basic breakfast: toast, cereals, coffee and juice. The ad said 5 mins walk to city...hm, I'd make that 10. Well, 5 mins takes you to Courtenay Place, but you still have 5 more to go to get to the Civic Square.
Great host (John) who taught me a few lessons on which qualities in life that are important. Centrally located, but quiet. Leave a Comment Theme: Bed and BreakfastPrice: US$20-40 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: 116 Brougham Street, , Wellington, North Island 60

 | | | | James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor Wellington: Central and comfortable. Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
This is not the most modern nor uptodate hotel in the city. However it is very centrally placed, very easy to find from the motorway, has underground valet parking and really is a very convenient place to stay if you want to be in the heart of the city.
Freephone from within New Zealand: 0800 275 337. Email:guestservices@jamescookhotel.co.nz. There are two buildings, and the higher levels, are the better rooms. However they are also more expensive. These rooms also have a nice view over the city and harbour if you are on the right side. Conference rooms available, and it's possible to host a function and have it all under one roof, including accommodation. You are right in the heart of the main city shops, and no need to take taxi rides to get to them. Although it is walking distance, you may like to take a cab to the Te Papa Museum, for around $10 NZD. | | | | Mercure Hotel, Wellington: Fantastic Views over the Capital from The Terrace | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Normally Mercure hotels are not too bad but I cannot tell you if the 3.5 star hotel located on The Terrace still has the quality of its predecessor Terrace Regency where we once stayed for several nights after a nightmare night at a traffic-noise plagued hostel. So we thought we deserved a special treat and booked in at the then Terrace Regency. It was very elegant, and the service was just incredible. They treated the guests like stars - and the many signed photos on the walls showed that a lot of real stars had stayed there. We loved the rugs in the elevator. They changed it every day and the print on the rugs said: "Have a happy Wednesday", and: "Have a happy Thursday", etc. We arrived when breakfast time was over but we asked if we could still have a little snack. Suddenly several waiters started running around, and they carried back all bowls with cereals, fruit etc. back into the breakfast room, they cooked eggs, brewed coffee - all at a time when it was normally closed. We nearly felt embarrassed by so much kindness. Although the hotel restaurant was very nice we wanted to have dinner in a more unique restaurant. They checked out I do not know how many restaurants in town to find us one that served Beef Wellington... and finally gave us a courtesy ride to the city... Isn't such attention wonderful? Anyway. As I cannot guarantee you if all this still is the standard you can expect (a reason to test it in the not too far future) just accept my description as a sweet memory from times gone by. If it is not so perfect just enjoy the spectacular panoramic views over the city and harbour - they remain the same. Just make sure you get a room with a view. Try to get a good deal on the internet. Whereas rack rates are between NZ$ 200 and 300 you can get unrestricted rates from NZ$115 to 177 for the same rooms and hot deals (prepaid, no change, no cancellation) from NZ$105 to 167. Especially on the weekends you have a good chance of getting rooms for about NZ$105 to 115. (Rates as March 2007)
Apart from the spectacular view the now Mercure (111 rooms) has a heated indoor swimming pool, and gym and a sauna, and conference rooms, restaurant and bar as well.
