I visited this place in 1998. At that time, I find the hotel stuff to be firendly. Rooms very nice. They have gym, conference rooms for the business meetings and nice restaurant.

The Best Western Portland Hotel of Thorndon is located within walking distance of Wellington CBD. The hotel is situated near the ferry, rail and bus depots, Parliament buildings and Botanical Gardens. The Portland Hotel of Thorndon Wellington is located 10 minutes from the downtown central business district.
