Where to stay, what to do...
by rsjoekri
Hi all...
I'm planning to go to Wellington with a friend of mine around Jan 3-18, 2005. We'd like to rent a studio apartment for about 1 or 2 weeks with great view of the harbour, preferably Oriental Bay area. Would appreciate if anyone can advise where I should look to (website etc) or if you know anyone that would let their apartment for that time?
Also, if anyone would advise what should we do in Wellington for 2 weeks? What beach should we go to if we just want to laze around, preferably one without the cold wind.
Thanks beforehand!
Rima

Don't come to Wellington for a laze on the beach - the wind won't allow it and the beaches are lousy. The best looking beach in town has been made with sand from elsewhere and has to be topped up at regular intervals as it blows away!

Travel Tips for Wellington
The relocated Museum Hotel
by Kakapo2
-
This is not an accommodation tip as I have not stayed at the Museum Hotel which sits at a fabulous location next to Te Papa. I write about it because it formerly sat at the place where you now find Te Papa, and it was relocated in 1993 to make way for the new national museum. It was the biggest structure ever moved in New Zealand.
It took four months to loosen the building from its foundations, and only two days to move it 120 metres across the road on a railway. The hotel reopened five month after the spectacular shift.
If you are interested in details, read the full story of the relocation on the hotel’s website
In the hotel they have a model of the relocation.
If you want to stay at hotel – rates start at about $ 150 (weekend; up to 325 for a two bedroom suite), and during the week from $ 185. Weekend packages including breakfast buffet and a bottle of bubbly for $239, with three-course dinner for two $ 279. (Prices as April 2008)

The Tararua Forest Park
by keeweechic
The Tararua Forest Park is about 50kms north of Wellington and covers 155,000 hectares. The area is rugged with steep hills which are covered largely in native beech forest. On a fine clear day you can also get great views of the Tararua ranges and also as far north-west to see Mt Taranaki. The Wairarapa Valley is to the east and Wellington harbour to the south.
Inexpensive Taxi Rides to/from Airport
by Kakapo2
As the airport is only 8 km from the city travelling by taxi is not really expensive. A trip to Lambton Quay or the Railway Station (Parliamentary Zone) sets you back about NZ$ 30, a trip to Courtenay Place costs about NZ$ 25.
