Fairly comfortable at the Comfort Hotel

We thought this hotel looked familiar....in fact, we stayed here in 2004 when it was the Chancellor (and a little bit more upmarket, but we paid a lot more then too).

We got a good deal on this hotel by booking over the Internet. We paid just $80 per night, which for this standard in a capital city in Australia, you wouldn't get much at all!

Although, the beds were only as comfortable as some of the ones we had staying in cabin parks....they look ok, but I think they may be fairly old beds that have been 'dressed up' with new linens, etc. Still, for 2 nights, it wasn't really a problem.

Bathroom was modern and clean, and had all the mod cons like heated towel rail, hairdryer, tea & coffee making facilities. Not much of a view, but we weren't there for that.

Unique Quality: Location, location....being in the Cuba Quarter so close to the Cuba Mall was great. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops around. It's a vibrant quarter and a good place to explore on foot.

Attention: There is nowhere out the front to leave your car for 5 mins while you check in. We read the sign 'loading zone' but didn't want to find a park elsewhere in the city and drag all our luggage to the hotel....so in we went for 5 mins, and got a $40 parking fine, along with the people who unloaded their van in front of us.

It would have been better to unload all our luggage on the footpath, then send my husband off to park the car and wait at the kerb for him to come back, then both ferry our luggage into the hotel.
We would have been better paying the $15 per night for a multistorey car park fairly close by....in the end, we did get an overnight park just across the road from the hotel, after the shops closed.

Excellent budget hotel in city centre

Not very different from a Business hotel, this hotel offers great value for money.

Our double room at less than 230 NZD for 3 nights (winter special) was modern, clean with plush carpets, modern decor, ensuite shower room/toilet and satellite TV.

Everything looks new and you cant beat the location as its right in the heart of the city next to restaurants, bars and shops.

Only downside is no free parking although they have a deal with car park nearby for 10$ per 24 hrs.

Unique Quality: Lovely building but modern furnishings.

Location, location, location

Nice bar on premises.

Restaurant downstairs is not part of hotel but will charge to rooms in hotel.

Comfortable, cozy & central

The refurbished rooms are done very well. Very comfortable, clean and elegant decor.

Unique Quality: Completely refurbished in 2003, this heritage style Wellington accommodation has 114 modern guest rooms, beautifully complementing the detailed 1900's architecture of the property.

When you stay at Comfort Hotel Wellington, you are located amongst the many cafes and restaurants, buskers, and boutique shopping that Cuba Street is famous for.

Cheap Motel

Trekkers Hotel / Motel is a great place to stay for a budget holiday, we stayed in a spacious motel type room, that resembled a small house / flat. These rooms have there own kitchen facilities, lounge area with tv and bathroom.
There are two bedrooms with two single beds in each, also a rollaway bed for an extra person.

Trekkers is close to the central city and on Cuba Street, so you won't have to catch buses or taxi anywhere, its all within walking distance.

Trekkers also has a couple of computers that will allow you to update your VT site and keep in touch with your friends for a cost.

Trekkers has an onsite bar and restaurant and comfortable couches to relax on and have a quiet drink or plan your next Wellington adventure.

Unique Quality: Internet Access
TV
Kitchen facilities
Off street parking

Hip places to stay??

by meesolab

I am traveling to New Zealand and will be in Wellington on the first few days of April, for a business and pleasure trip. Can anyone recommend a few nice/unique hotels to stay at? I am not really searching for Luxury, just nice accommodations in an area that is close to some bars and restaurants that I can entertain at? …Someplace younger and hipper than the old Victorian numbers that seem to be so prevalent. As always, all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!!

Hiya! Go take a look here....http://www.museumhotel.co.nz/
I have stayed in this hotel a few times and loved it. NZ$196 ( you could find it cheaper online) is not in the luxury hotel class for Wellington at all and not many hotels can be had for much less. Also stay at The Duxton reasonably often, its great as all rooms have harbour views. Remember that central Wellington is not enormous, we never use our car when staying there, walk everywhere and all mid city hotels are in amongst 100's of cafes, bars and restaurants. Just as a matter of interest, Wellington has the most cafes/restaurants per head of population in the world! And they are fabulous!
I adore that city and we are looking at relocating there...have a great time. :)

Cheers...Lyn

I book travel for my job every day - and if you want somewhere close to bars and restaurants then you should be looking in the Courtenay Place region of wellington...
Try googling: Cambridge Hotel (has both hotel and backpackers with a very busy bar full of locals underneath). J Street Hotel aka Quest on Johnston St or anything near Te Papa (museum hotel) - or Oriental Parade.
Good Luck!

I dont know about "hip" but last time I was in Wellington I stayed at the Comfort Hotel Wellington, right on Cuba Street with its cafes and restaurants.
See: http://www.ki-wi.co.nz/wellington_hotels.htm

If you want a nice restaurant try Logan Brown only a couple of hundred metres from the hotel.
