Even though I really am not into the American corporate machine, when it comes to business trips, I don't have any options of where the company sets my hubby up to stay. We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Wellington. It's a new hotel and we stayed in the long term suites which were set up much like an apartment, to include an acutal washer and dryer. There were a few irritating things about the hotel, such as toilet paper should be kept in the bathroom, not under the kitchen sink. When you have a housekeeping unit and the guests are washing the dishes, it means you must leave dish towels. Also, there should be pots and pans in every unit, you should not have to request them. Other than that, the bed was very comfy and there was even a *pillow menu* that you could select the kind of pillow that you wanted. Hopefully in time, the little kinks will be worked out with the service, but otherwise it was very comfortable for someone who was working in country. The views from my window of the Beehive were fabulous! Bed was totally comfortable and we had ample space to spread out. It was pretty nice!
Sleek hotel

The Holiday Inn is a fairly new hotel and has the modern decor to prove it. As other visitors have mentioned, there is a translucent glass wall that separates the main room from the bath. This can create an awkward situation for shy people or in the middle of the night, if one person gets up to use the bathroom, the whole room will be illuminated. We found this to be enough of an obstacle to complain to the manager on duty. He was extremely understanding and helpful. In fact, he upgraded us to a top floor suite that had a real, walled bathroom. The manager indicated that there had been other complaints about the glass walled bathroom and that they were working on a fix .
Once this problem was so satisfactorily solved, we enjoyed the spectacular views from our rooms and the very modern, sleek decor. All the rooms have a mini kitchen with fridge and microwave. We always find this to be a very desireable amenity whether we use it a lot or not.
While not smack in the middle of town, it is close to various attractions including the Te Papa Museum -- a must see.
Even though we were there at a milder time of the year, the wind in Wellington really bites as it gusts in straight from Antarctica. Be sure to bring a warm/windproof jacket and a hat.
Well-positioned

A well-positioned hotel, walking distance from the main sights and the waterfront. Room was very comfortable but a bit small and we didn't like the semi-opaque glass wall to the bathroom. We also failed to investigate the parking situation - there is none at the hotel so we had to pay for valet parking at the Intercontinental further down the road.
GReat Hotel

We spent 2 days in the hostel in Wellington in December. The hotel is really new, rooms are clean, quite big and well furnished. The view from the windows is amazing (we were on the 13th floor).
The only strange thing is the opaque windows that separate the room to the bath room, it's really not common and can be embarrassing for some people.
The hotel is really close to all government buildings, close to the main shopping street. Nightlife activities are not so far away, 15min by foot, or 5min by taxi.

I stay in Wellington a lot on business. Have tried all the hotels. This has quietest and darkest rooms and great beds. The Glass wall to the bathroom would be off putting if you were not alone. The service is efficient an unobtrusive. It's particuarly well located. The meals are excelent but there is a lot of variety in a 10 minute walk. Even though it's on a busy intersection, the soundproofing works making it the quietest place I've stayed anywhere.

Upmarket for a Holiday Inn. Stylish, bright, clean and modern.
Only minus is the glass screen - um, not sure what they were thinking when they did that. However, it's not the end of the world.
Staff were very pleasant too.
Above average - a few oddities

First off, the location is great if you're arriving or leaving by train or ferry - just a half a block from the train station. The ferry offers a shuttle from the terminal to the train station, and you can easily walk to the hotel from there. It's also close to many of the government buildings. Otherwise, it's in a business-oriented area and most things close quite early, but you're still within walking distance to attractions like TePapa and the cable car.
This is a very upscale property for a Holiday Inn. The rooms are very nice, with comfy beds and a choice of pillows (you call room service for them.) The opaque wall in the bathroom is very odd. Not only can you see through it, as others have mentioned, but if someone gets up in the dark and needs to turn on the bathroom light, it floods the bedroom with light as well, which can be quite annoying.
The other odd thing is that the room was equipped with a nice kitchenette, but there's no place set up to eat. There is a small desk and chair one person can eat it, but otherwise there's just a small chair with a footstool , or the bed. However, the kitchen is a nice touch, and there's a full grocery store in the railway station just a block away. We bought some takeout meals to heat up which were excellent.
The staff was friendly and helpful. There is a business center for internet access, but they close at 5:00 or so, which wasn't very helpful for us since we were out touring during the day and wanted to check e-mails in the evening. They will rent you a laptop to use in the room, but we didn't bother. No internet cafes nearby, either.
All in all, though, we enjoyed our stay despite the minor annoyances, and would stay here again.

This is a great hotel in a good location. I do agree with the other posters regarding the glass wall in the bathroom. Not sure what someone was thinking. All the hotel employees were friendly and quite helpful. . The restaurant in the hotel was terrific for dinner, although breakfast seemed a little hectic. Wellington is a beautiful city and I would love to return.

The Holiday Inn is by far the best hotel in Wellington. It is brand new -- and tastefully decorated at that. The bar and restaurant scene are not what one would usually find at a hotel. Even the locals like it there. The lobby is beautiful and the rooms are very well thought out. Ours had a small kitchen area as well as a big bathroom (well lit), nice work space, and a bit of a view.
Hotel service is fantastic with competent front desk staff, bartenders, etc. Front desk was happy to arrange for things like airport transfers at far below the rate I could have gotten on my own.
Location is fantastic, with easy access to parliament, the te papa museum, shopping and museums and Cuba street.
One drawback is that the "gym" is very small (2 machines). The pool was fine and the general gym/pool/sauna area was very clean, well lit, and welcoming.
Even though there are a few other hotels which are supposedly more stars, this is by far the nicest hotel in Wellington. The others are all much older, not to mention more expensive. When I was in town, a large music festival had just finished.. Most of the VIPs stayed at the Holiday Inn.
