weather

by ohaiyo

I'm thinking of visiting New Zealand, both the North and South Islands, in either May or June.

What would the weather be like?

Re: weather

by nznat

Cold and rainy

Where are you from it might be quite mild compared to where your from. It will never be too cold to go out and about, you'll just need a jacket and a raincoat.

At least during that time if you go to Mt Ruapehu or Queenstown/ Mt Hutt you can do skiing or snow boarding.

If you're lucky, May could still be reasonable, but be still prepared for cold wet southwesterlies. June and July are the worst months in my opinion, but even some winterdays can be very nice. Strictly winterclothing though, but a t-shirt for the odd warmer day. You can get snow inland and if you travel by car, you might need chains to cross the passes.( but that is more the exception than the rule).
During the last week it has been lovely warm autumn-weather though, and this may still last for a while, with a few days of cold southerlies every once in a while.

the weather can be quite unpredictable - it typically rains a lot in winter (which is what keeps the place so beautiful and green!! and places like Mitre Peak look even more beautiful with waterfalls and mist all around!) but all sorts happen - and it varies between islands too and location eg nelson and around can still be nice warm and sunny whereas down the west coast raining or even snowing by then. the more north you go up the north island the typically warmer.
we were in Te Anau for Boxing Day and it snowed! - in summer!
The Canterbury plains can be dry or could have heavy snow falls. often the west coast has floods - or it might have lovely sunshine!! the trick is to have enough to layer up or layer down! and just go with the elements. buy some gumboots if you think itd help!?!!
and of course its a great country to buy more winter woolies if youre short - makes a good souvenir! and take a raincoat or good umbrella. or buy one as you go along.

Very good advice and description by angiebabe. As the weather around the world has become crazy and unpredictable you can never say how the weather will be. The year before last winter was like spring - and we had winter in spring LOL Last year was not so nice - but still we had super days on a trip to the Bay of Islands. For the West Coast winter is the best season as it rains less in winter than in summer, so it is the best time to visit the glaciers. Good tramping (hiking) boots will do for bad weather ;-) Just check for snowfall if you want to drive on pass roads as they might be closed.

Travel Tips for Wellington

John Plimmer

by fishandchips

At the bottom of the Plimmer Steps, running between Boulcott St and Lambton Quay, stands a monument to the man awarded the title 'Father of Wellington'. The statue is of Plimmer and his dog - probably out escaping from his 11 children (spread over 2 marriages) - he had 11 siblings of his own!

Plimmer came to Wellington in 1841 and settled at Te Aro. He was a bit of a businessman with his most successful early venture being the purchase of a wrecked ship the "Inconstant" which he transformed into a wharf warehouse commonly known as "Noah's Ark. A that stage the warf came up to modern day Lambton Quay! What is now the old Bank Archade sits on top of the original site of Noahs Ark.

He died at the ripe old age of 92 in 1905.

get thee to an espresso bar!

by tomatohead

There are reportedly more cafes in Wellington per capita than anywherelse you can think of (how's that for scientific?)

A glossary:
Flat White: espresso drink with unfoamed milk
Long Black: espresso with hot water (aka an Americano)
Cappuccino: espresso with lots of steamed and foamed milk
Latte: espresso with LOTS more steamed and foamed milk - often served in bowls as big as your head

Havana Roasters near Cuba St. makes lovely beans. You can find a cafe serving Havana coffee if you look for the red star. Off hand, Fidels at the top end of Cuba (near Real Groovy), the cafe well inside the lobby of the Chancellor/Trekkers Hotel, the purple onion (is that its name?), the Lady Luck....

Indoor Go Karting

by wkcsmt

Not quite the real thing but you'll have just as much excitement go karting in this indoor circuit. Race against friends / families with speeds of up to 30 km/h in this challenging environment. Minimum age is 9 years old & at least 1.2m tall (to be able to reach the pedals). There are two-seater bikes for the smaller kids. The cost is about NZD$25 for half an hour. There are many more options to choose from.

Hours:
9am-10pm Mondays to Saturdays
9am-9pm Sundays

More walking in Wellington

by craic

Here is another example of something I must do on this trip.
Catch a lovely day and catch a number 23 bus Southgate-Mairangi. (They don't go all that often, so check a timetable.)
Get off in View Road, Houghton Bay.
Keep in mind they call it View Road for a reason.
Walk along the ridge line then head down - either to Lyall Bay and stop of for refreshment at the Maranui Cafe on the beach which used the be the Surf Lifesaving Club - or head towards Island Bay and find a cafe there.
I went out to a friend's place in View Road with an American and an Australian who had not been there before - and did delight in their squeals of amazement as the bus driver swung the bus along this goat track!
If you are really fit you could do it the other way round and come down by the Wellington Zoo.
A spectacular walk.

Colonial Carrying Company

by fishandchips about 3C

The old Colonial Carrying Company in Chews Lane has been changed into a very nice pub with a mix of new and old. It's quite a nice setting on the lane and there are plenty of seats outside for smokers or those wanting fresh air (not by the smokers of course). The bar itself has a wide range of NZ and O'seas beers and wines and you can get everything from bar snacks to light meals (didn't try eating here though). The bar is very busy from 5.30 to 7pm when local office workers pop in for a drink or two after a hard day moving paper and playing with spreadsheets. Smart casual at least with many in here wearing suits - but don't let that put you off as I'm normally one of them.
