Alliance Francaise of Wellington
by Kate-Me
As we were wandering the streets of Wellington, I happened to notice a sign announcing the Alliance Francaise, and as I am a member of this organisation in Australia, I decided to check out the building....and found one of the prettiest, most colourful (yet still restful) that I'd seen yet....a green roof with yellow trim at the top skirting, 3 toned walls, and a blue area beyond an arched doorway.
It was just such a beautiful foyer to me.
White Water Rafting
by Markyreid
A great way to see some rugged scenary while having a adrenaline rush at the same time. Riverplay provided all the equipment required for the day, and even included a packed lunch and drinks. All you need to bring are your bathers/jocks and a towel to dry yourself with at the end. Riverplay provide enough equipment to keep you warm and the sandflies away.
Old St. Paul's
by vtveen
On our walk through Wellington we also encountered Cathedral Church of St. Paul, or as it is called nowadays "Old St. Paul's".
The outside of this gothic building is white and it does not look very big. But once we went inside we were impressed by the warmth of the timber interior with some beautiful stained glass windows. The church was built (1866) in native timbers like totara, rimu and kauri.
After the realisation of a new cathedral Old St. Paul's is no longer a parish church and was taken over by the government of New Zealand.
You will find Old St. Paul's at 34 Mulgrave Street, Thorndon, Wellington. It is rather close to the Old Government Buildings at the north end of Lambton Quay.
Pop Rock Ale Mecca
by tomatohead about Bar Bodega
This is a place where many a famous Kiwi and overseas band have played many a memorable gig.
Apparently the only folks never to come through here were The Finn Brothers (yes, folks there is a NZ pop music life outside of the Finn Bros!) and Shihad/Pacifier. This is where the Chills, the Bats, Michael Franti, Lambchop, The Datsuns, Phoenix Foundation, Dimmer, Chris Knox, The Mutton Birds, etc. have played. Okay, the Indigo Bar on Cuba Mall is getting bigger and better gigs, but thumbs up for the different kinds of rooms at the Bodega.
My favorite Mutton Bird bootleg of all time is a 1998 Bodega show.
Fraser McInnes, the owner, is one hell of a hardworking bar owner/concert organizer/real ale aficionado.
Don't miss The Bodega's nice selection of South and North Island micros. Check out the Bodega's joint venture ale with the Malthouse...the Tautara line and Emerson's Bookbinder. ??
